A traditional inn on Chester's Main Street, known for hearty British pub food, cask ales and a relaxed, dog-friendly welcome.

About White Horse Inn

The White Horse Inn is a traditional pub-style building on Main Street in Chester, the kind of place that leans into old-fashioned character rather than polished uniformity. It sits centrally, within easy reach of the city's attractions and transport links, making it a straightforward base for exploring the area without needing a car once you've arrived, though free on-site parking is available if you do.

Rooms are en-suite and include family options, kept simple rather than plush, with free WiFi and drinks available in room. The heart of the place is downstairs, where the restaurant and bar serve homemade British classics such as steak and ale pie and fish and chips, alongside a good range of cask ales. Breakfast is served each morning, packed lunches can be arranged, and there's a garden, picnic area and outdoor seating for sitting out when the weather allows.

The atmosphere is generally described as warm and relaxed, with staff noted for being attentive, and prices seen as fair for what's offered. Dogs are welcome throughout, and reception operates around the clock. A golf course, entertainment, and further pubs and restaurants are all within reach nearby, making it an easy spot to settle into for a night or two in Chester.

We were delighted to hear The White Horse was reopening. Elektra and the team have done an amazing job bringing it back to life. We visited a few weeks ago on a Sunday, family of 5 with 2 dogs. We had a wonderful meal and great variety of drinks, good quality ones too. The dogs were made exceptionally welcome, bowls of chicken breast, dog ice cream.... really wonderful! Our family live in the area and are now regulars and we go in when we are visiting. Well done for bringing this lovely Inn back to an enjoyable visit. I would 100% recommend a visit and this lovely little village.

Had an exquisite homemade steak and ale pie, absolutely packed with tender chunks of steak and full of flavour. You can really tell the food is cooked from fresh. The menu is full of British classics, all at a very fair price for the quality on offer. Great selection of cask ales as well, which was a real bonus. The atmosphere was excellent – relaxed, welcoming and just what you want from a proper country pub. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive throughout. They also offer rooms, making it ideal for a longer stay. We’ll definitely be back, especially for their music festival at the start of May. Highly recommended.

I recently visited The White Horse Inn in Great Barrow and was really impressed. It’s a lovely, traditional village pub with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff were genuinely friendly and made me feel right at home. The food was excellent proper homemade pub dishes, cooked well and full of flavour and the drinks selection, especially the cask ales, was spot on. The pub is cosy inside and has a great outdoor area for nicer weather. It’s also dog-friendly. Overall, it’s a charming place with great service and great food. I’d definitely go back and recommend it to others.

Stayed here recently again and all I can say it WOW! It’s a different place! Rooms have been refurbished and are tastefully themed. Some great artwork which is in keeping with the room. The pub is looking great also, previously it was tired. I have dinner with my family who live locally and recommend trying g it again. All is home cooked- fish and chips for £10 on a Friday. 4 cask pubs and lots of choices for spirits. Definitely will use them again when I’m in the area visiting family.
