About Ilex Farm Camping
Prefer peace, space and scenery over lively places with loads of facilities? You'll be among like-minded folk at Ilex Farm Camping – though not many of them, since this Derbyshire site deliberately keeps numbers low to preserve that restful atmosphere. Simple, spacious grass pitches are spread across three level terraces, each with privacy, shade from mature trees and lovely valley views. It's a proper escape, with easy farm walks from your pitch (dogs welcome year-round) and longer cycling routes threading through the surrounding countryside.
The Peak District National Park sits about 15 minutes away, while attractions like Chatsworth House, Hardwick Hall and the Heights of Abraham make excellent day trips. Closer to hand, the nearest pub is just under a mile for post-ramble refreshment, and Clay Cross (five minutes' drive) covers shopping essentials. Facilities are straightforward – toilets, showers, washing-up, chemical disposal and ice pack freezing – but the pitch fees reflect that simplicity, and the site runs on renewable energy. A bus route to Chesterfield and Matlock runs nearby if you fancy leaving the car behind.

What visitors say
Several happy days here as part of Motorhome Fun rally in Sept 2025. It's a C&CC CL in rural Derbyshire and a perfect place for us. (Apart from the obvious absence of a sea view & the sound of crashing waves!!) Instead there are lovely views across the fields and nice places to walk to for people who like a gentle stroll to a farm shop/cafe or an oak beam type country pub with fancy food but also for people who have longer legs & wider horizons. The toilet & shower facilities are very new & very lovely - not extensive in number but more than adequate for everyone there along with us. Lovely barn for gatherings. Not sure how open this is for more casual visitors, check the website or ask if it matters but for us 'rallyers' it was an excellent asset, charmingly if inaccurately re-named 'cow shed' by one of the bands who performed for us it's got nice wood panelling and infrared heat to give a cosy feeling (without being actually toasty warm) and all the space you'd need for the size of the site. There is a steepish longish walk for those of us in the bottom field up to the facilities but I didn't mind that a bit as we got better views across the fields. I cannot at all agree with the one-star reviewer who criticised the discrete entrance signage and the need for multiple drive-wheels to exit the site. This is pretty dry stone wall territory - neon lights & shouty signs are for city high streets, he must have been not following the sat-nav properly and/or driving too fast and if he really needs 4 wheel drive here he also needs a driving lesson. (imho!) So, lovely campsite delivers all you could expect and we're looking forward to re-visiting in the future. Very happy to recommend & give 5 stars.

We had a lovely stay this week. Such a beautiful site. The owners are fantastic. So helpful! Toilets and showers were spotless. Would definitely visit again.

We stayed as a family & friends group witn children 6-13yrs and a dog. The site itself if on a working horse livery, well kept pitches with simple amenities. Toilets & showers are well kept and within a good distance to pitches. Although no washing up facilities were available during our stay, I noted that they are preparing for this to be added. The hosts were lovely, professional and made sure we had what we needed. Would stay again.

Great place for a peaceful stopover. Very welcoming host. The shower and toilet cubicles were modern and clean. Unfortunately, there was no hot water so we couldn't have a shower which is why I only gave 4 stars. I would have loved to give this place 5 stars because everything else was perfect.
