About Old Posting House

Old Posting House began life as a coaching inn, and that heritage still shapes the place today: a low, characterful building at Deanscales, just outside Cockermouth, with just seven rooms rather than corridors of identikit ones. Each comes with an en-suite bathroom, free WiFi and drinks in the room, and the whole property is kept spotlessly clean, with staff who are attentive without being intrusive.

The restaurant and bar are very much the heart of the place, serving traditional, homemade-style food in generous portions. The Sunday roast and the beef brisket are particular favourites among those who eat here, and the cosy dining room and garden give the property a proper pub-and-hotel feel rather than a purely functional one. Breakfast is included, and free on-site parking makes arriving straightforward.

Outside, Cumbria's walking and cycling country stretches out in every direction, and golf is close at hand for those who want it. Cockermouth itself is a short distance away, and Maryport lies a little further out for a day trip. Pets are welcome, and luggage storage and 24-hour reception help with early arrivals or late departures.

We stayed at Old Posting House for a couple nights over the weekend. We booked very last minute for that same day, after an issue with a campsite we had been booked to stay at. They were super helpful and friendly on the phone when we called to inquire about a room. We took our two dogs who were very welcome there. We had food there both evening we stayed which was delicious, we also had breakfast which was included in our room booking. The room was a very reasonably priced with having breakfast included. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and is obviously very well looked after. The room was very relaxed, clean and tidy. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to stay in the area or looking for somewhere to get dinner. Hope to visit again in the future.

Stayed at the hotel for one night whilst hiking in the area, landlady was very welcoming and friendly throughout. Room was very comfortable and hotel was spotless. Some road noise, as our room faced the road, didn’t disturb us too much. We had the beef and lamb from the Easter Sunday menu, fabulous food and lots of it! Breakfast was very good too, a very pleasant stay.

Great place. Lovely staff. Great food. We messed up our restaurant booking but they still made us welcome and found a spot for us in the bar. We'll definitely be back. Been back twice since and I reckon it's the best pub food I've had for ages. And not stingy on the portion size too.

Fourth time we've been back for food and as always it was beautiful. This time got the beef brisket, the beef was cooked beautifully and the portion was huge. Made to feel very welcome and will certainly be back again.
