Shrewsbury Prison

Incredible experience with a hilarious twist! We had such an amazing time exploring Shrewsbury Prison! Instead of just walking around normally, my husband and I decided to make it extra fun—I took on the role of the Prison Guard and he was the Inmate, and we even handcuffed ourselves together with FIVE pairs of handcuffs while walking around! The reactions from other visitors and staff were absolutely priceless. The prison itself is fascinating and packed with history. Walking through the Victorian wings and exploring the cells at our own pace was brilliant. It really gives you a genuine feel for what life was like behind bars (even when you're exploring with a smile on your face!). Highly recommend visiting if you're looking for a great mix of history and fun. Just make sure your "inmate" behaves! 👮‍♀️⛓️🔒

A few years ago I was in Birmingham, when I learned about this prison, and decided it I wanted to check it out, and it was worth the train ride. The atmosphere felt empty and eerie, which I like, lol. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, and personable, we saw and learned a lot, including the origin of the phrase "Pulling my leg." Overall, it was a very good tour, and I very much enjoyed the day trip to Shrewsbury.

If you are looking for a day out that is as educational as it is atmospheric, Shrewsbury Prison is an absolute must-visit. From the moment you arrive, the experience is top-notch; the gentleman at the front desk was incredibly informative, setting the perfect tone for the tour with a warm welcome and a wealth of background knowledge. The site is steeped in social history, having served as a Victorian jail until it was finally decommissioned in 2013. Walking through the gates feels like stepping back in time, as much of the prison remains exactly as it was when the last inmates left. Highlights from the visit The prison is a labyrinth of fascinating, sobering, and architecturally striking spaces. Here are a few things to look out for: The Victorian Wings: The scale of the main wings is massive. Looking up, you’ll see an impressive glass skylight roof supported by massive timber rafters, which floods the metal walkways and safety netting below with natural light—a sharp contrast to the cramped conditions of the cells. Seeing the living quarters firsthand really brings the reality of prison life home. The cells are stark, featuring heavy doors with small viewing hatches, narrow bunk beds with simple blue mattresses, and the iconic, utilitarian gray plastic toilet units. The Courtyards: Even the exterior is imposing. The red-brick Victorian architecture and high-walled courtyards remind you just how secure and isolated this "city within a city" once was. Whether you are a history buff, a fan of crime dramas (parts of the BBC's shows were filmed here!), or just looking for something unique to do, this place delivers. It is definitely worth a visit for the stories, the facts, and the incredible preservation of such a significant piece of UK heritage.

Had my hen here! Wanted to visit the prison for a very long time and I'm so chuffed my girls booked the escape room! We got out 4 mins to spear. The staff are so friendly fun! definitely love the job and I can see why! They made it so fun! Can't wait to come back and see you all again!
