About The Old Stocks Inn
The Old Stocks Inn faces the green on Stow-on-the-Wold's market square, opposite the medieval stocks the building takes its name from. It began as a 17th-century coaching inn and was substantially refurbished a decade or so ago, which turned a fairly traditional pub into a boutique hotel while keeping the stone frontage, beams and fireplaces intact.
Bedrooms are individually decorated and lean modern, with bold colours and contemporary furniture set against original features. Rooms at the front look over the square and the green; those at the back are quieter and overlook the garden. Facilities include walk-in showers, mini fridges, tea and coffee equipment and flat-screen televisions. Room sizes vary a good deal, as they do in most converted inns, so it is worth reading the descriptions before booking.
The restaurant holds two AA rosettes and serves modern British cooking, with a separate bar menu for lighter meals. Behind the inn there is a terraced patio garden used for outdoor dining in good weather, which is unusual for a property this central. Parking is available on site, a real advantage in Stow, where the square fills quickly. The inn was acquired by the Wiltshire brewer Arkell's in 2025.
Its position makes it one of the most convenient bases in the Cotswolds: Stow is roughly central, with Bourton-on-the-Water, the Slaughters, Bibury and Chipping Campden all within half an hour. The town's antiques shops, galleries and pubs are a two-minute walk. It suits couples on a short break and walkers, and works particularly well for people without a car who want to be able to step straight out into a village.

What guests say
Loved! Our room was on the top floor. Every night, we would sleep with the window open & awake to the chimes of the church bell & birds singing. They cleaned our room every night without us having to ask. Food in the restaurant was wonderful at both breakfast & dinner. Very helpful for my elderly mom. She stayed in a garden room on the 1st floor. They kindly did a small load of laundry for her, folded it & put it back on her bed! Highly recommend!

I had a lovely couple nights stay at the Old Stocks Inn with my partner. The room was great and well equipped with a lovely bay window looking outside. The service and breakfast were great and we really enjoyed the outdoor seating at the back. It was a nice touch being given a free drink token each when being welcomed. It’s situated in a great location too to explore the Cotswolds!

We spent four wonderful nights here and were absolutely delighted. The room, although on the smaller side, was absolutely beautiful and equipped with everything we could possibly need. It was decorated with so much taste! Parking was a breeze, as it’s incredibly easy to park right at the front door—a huge plus for this area. A couple of small things to note: the room was extremely warm, which was surprising for late April. I can’t imagine how hot it might get during an intense summer day! Also, while the staff were very friendly and pleasant, we did ask for some extra hangers that never arrived (it seemed they might have run out). Overall, we had a lovely experience and would definitely recommend it for its charm and convenience!

Went for dinner twice. Excellent food- I would place it at highest end you can get before its fine dining. Good service, nice secluded garden setting. Delicious food that is a major step up from classic pub/gastropub but not michelin level.
