Cross Dormont sits in the heart of the Lake District's landscape, surrounded by the fells that define this part of Cumbria. Howtown, where the site is located, lies on the eastern shore of Ullswater, one of the region's largest lakes, with high moorland rising behind. The setting is remote and mountainous rather than manicured – this is fell country, not a manicured park.

The campsite has showers on site. Beyond that, the appeal here is the landscape and access to it: the surrounding hills and lakeside offer plenty of walking and outdoor activity, and the quiet location means this is a base for people who want to be in the hills rather than entertainment on the campground itself.

We stayed here for 2 nights, £25 per night, we didn’t realise you have to pay 50p to operate the shower and had no cash with us but luckily the guy allowed us to bank transfer money and he gave us 50p’s in return. The campsite had a lovely view over the lake and we thoroughly enjoyed sitting there enjoying the sun and sunset over the mountain ahead. The facilities are basic, toilets, showers, washing up sink but all very clean! You can access the lake by a field owned by the campsite opposite the site. My main downside of this site is that the grass really needed cutting… it was so overgrown.

Stayed here for the weekend in July and it was lovely. Facilities were clean, and the staff are welcoming and polite. Would happily stay here again 👍 Also, the farmer owns a field below the main campsite where you can launch watercraft, this was a huge bonus for us.

Absolutely lovely place nice green field perfect for camping close to water. Graeme is a good guy text me few days earlier before we come and ask if I want to be moved for better location on the field. For people who complain about other thinks just wee remind this is camp site not 3 or 4 star hotel👍

Beautiful views and owners were accommodating, but we were glad only to be making a single night emergency stopover, as the facilities are awful. Dirty, outdated showers and toilets; a weird old, dirty, abandoned fridge; an odd caravan (not sure what is going on there!). Fortunately we had everything with us including drinking water and didn’t use the facilities at all. Several of the people staying were very noisy late into the night with total disregard for others. We packed up at 6am and got back on the road. Could be a great site with a bit of thought, investment and management.
