Side Farm Camp Site

Side Farm, Ullswater, Penrith CA11 0NL, UK

View on Google Maps

Lakeside campsite on Ullswater with direct access to the water for swimming and paddleboarding.

About Side Farm Camp Site

Side Farm Camp Site sits on the shore of Ullswater, giving campers direct access to the lake itself. The main draw here is straightforward: you can swim and paddleboard from the site without leaving the grounds. The views across the water are substantial enough that guests consistently mention them, and the location puts you at the heart of the Lake District rather than on its outskirts.

Facilities are basic but maintained, with showers on site. Pitches are reasonably priced. The access road can be rough, so approach in that knowledge, but once there you have Ullswater on your doorstep and the fells around it. The staff are helpful. This is a working site rather than a polished one, but the water access and setting make it distinctive.

Stayed here whilst walking the coast to coast. Beautiful views but the entry road is a bit narrow and tretrious, or if you're walking it's a good 15 minutes walk dodging cars to get to the camping field. Pretty much the whole camping area is on a slope, and quite steep in some areas. That being said if you get a good spot it's a lovely.

Brilliant location sandwiched between ullswater and place fell. Access to the banks of ullswater perfect for swimming, paddle boarding etc. Brilliant little shop on site selling homemade snacks like oat cakes, flapjakes etc aswell as ice cream, drinks, crisps. Very nice staff. The Track to the field isn't for low sport cars so be warned. Very few flat pitches so be prepared to be sleeping on a lean. Facilities are very basic, showers are free but on a timed push button that only lasts 5 seconds so be prepared to be pressing that button constantly. Wash room available. Perfect place to stay for walking the fells aslong as you don't expect luxury. Looks over ullswater to Glenridding. Walking distance to patterdale and the patterdale hotel, the white lion pub and the water view bar. Good cheap prices.

Great site, basic but excellent location. Owners very friendly and helpful! Been here many times over the years, good memories. However, this time too many unsupervised kids with footballs and frisbees damaging tents and cars, with indifferent parents! Will use again, but not in school holiday periods, and yes, l have my own kids!

Beware of owners threatening you!!!!!!!! Arrived after a 2.5 hour journey and drove down the track towards the farm house to pay and get to the camp site, the road had a 10mph speed limit. Upon reaching the house, an older looking man stepped on the road so we could not pass and came to the window asking if we were blind. Thinking he was joking, my boyfriend laughed and said no, to which the man began to raise his voice and swear about how he was speeding, how he shouldn’t be driving and how he ‘doesn’t need people like us’. When my boyfriend apologised and said he didn’t realise he was speeding, (because he wasn’t), the man replied ‘you will be sorry’ and began to threaten us. He said we ‘must have been speeding’ as there was ‘dust flicked up’ by the tyres on the track. Thankfully, I began to record the altercation as soon as the man first came over as I could see he was getting aggressive, so I have the entire thing on video to prove what I am saying. I have emailed the site proof from my Life360 location app which also records the speed at which we are travelling on any road which shows our top speed was 7mph so we were in fact not speeding. No reply from the site, no apology or anything. Very disappointing as I have stayed at this site many many times over the years and have always ignored the reviews from others about the rude owners but have now seen it for myself. I can’t understand why the older generation think it is acceptable to speak to anyone this way, especially to threaten someone about three times younger than them without any proof that what they are saying is even true!!!
