About Dunkerleys Restaurant and Hotel

Lobster thermidor is the dish diners return for at Dunkerleys Restaurant and Hotel, a 16-room property on Beach St in Deal. The restaurant has built its reputation on fresh, well-prepared seafood, served at reasonable prices by staff who keep the atmosphere relaxed and welcoming rather than stiff or formal.

The hotel itself trades on a mix of elegant décor and coastal setting, with sea views from parts of the building and a sense of history running through the place. Rooms are comfortable, though it's worth noting some have been reported as less well kept than the dining side of the operation, so standards can vary from room to room. Breakfast is served on-site, there's a bar for evening drinks, and luggage storage is available for those breaking up a longer trip along the coast.

Free on-site parking makes it straightforward for those arriving by car, and the Beach St address puts guests within easy reach of Deal's seafront and town. It suits visitors after a good meal and a coastal base more than those seeking a polished, fully modernised stay.

Whilst the hotel and rooms may feel a bit dated, you could also say traditional. Either way I thought this was part of its charm. The room we had was spacious, clean with a very comfortable large bed. Centrally located along the seafront nowhere is really far. The staff were so very friendly where nothing was too much trouble. I asked one of the staff the day before what time breakfast finished, they said 9.30. I planned to do the parkrun along the seafront that starts at 9am and mentioned I wouldn’t probably get back until 9.45. The lady said, no problem I’ll do your breakfast then. This is what hospitality is all about, going the extra mile for your customer. As promised when I got back from my run I was welcomed to a delicious freshly cooked breakfast. I would say to set expectations, if you’re looking for a resort style hotel this wouldn’t be for you, but if you want a traditional small seaside hotel that is clean and comfortable with friendly staff then this will tick all your boxes. Looking forward to my next visit!

The restaurant has been a favourite in the town since its earliy days and we locals find it reliable. The food is super and the service last night was spot on. Dressed crab, moules mariniere and lamb were our mains and each was excellent. Wines are priced fairly. I have no experience of the hotel or breakfast, but for dining, would suggest one would be very unlucky to be disappointed.

What a gem! So close to the water and the sea breeze. The cold Guinness only added to the stay! Highly recommended stay while in the cozy walkable town of Deal. And... don't be afraid to ring the bell at reception quite loudly! It adds to the overall charm. You have to try it to appreciate it!

Very friendly hotel, the staff were all lovely. Perfectly placed directly on the seafront at Deal. The restaurant was serving top notch food (the large bowl of mussels were divine) at reasonable prices and had a lovely outdoor eating area to compliment the indoor space. It was quite busy but services times were still very reasonable. We stayed in a large room at the top of the building. The room was spacious and very clean with an incredible air conditioning unit (which was much appreciated during the recent heatwave) Furniture was a little dated but functional so it didn't detract from our stay. Likewise for the bathroom, a little dated but clean and functional. Our bed was extremely comfortable and I slept like a log. Breakfast was held in the same restaurant space as we ate our seafood in the night before. It was dressed differently and had a lovely homely vibe. You could help yourself to juices, fruit and cereal but hot drinks, toast and full English were all served on request. It was all delicious and plentiful and, as a hotel guest, unlimited. The space was open to non hotel customers also. The hotel does not have its own carpark, however there is a carpark just around the corner which is very reasonable esp between 4 and 10 so if you are staying for just one night it costs very little. My only negative of the whole stay was the accessibility. All rooms have access via stairs. There were even a couple of steps up into the checking in area. I walk with a stick and struggled with the stairs to our room. Unfortunately we wouldn't be able to stay longer than one night here due to this, which is a real shame.
