Knepp Safaris

Walk on the wild safari was excellent. Was fortunately a lovely day for it, saw some wonderful birds from close by, even saw a nightingale after a patient wait. The white storks were incredible. Our guide was hugely insightful on all Knepp subjects, botanical, societal, economic; he did an excellent job of bringing us from A to B while giving us the pleasant feeling of by rambling free without direction

I joined 12 other interesting people for the Beaver safari. Kat was the perfect guide, obviously very pationate and proud of the work being done at Knepp. I learnt a lot and had a really enjoyable few hours

We stayed at Knepp for two nights within the lower reaches of a particularly tall oak tree located in a quiet, wooded corner of the glamping area - in the Peregrine Treehouse. Furnished with upcycled materials and antiques, the treehouse had a lovely hippie/boho vibe happening - in no small part due to the prominent bed's beautiful cover blanket made from offcuts of variously patterned Indian cloth. Amongst a pithy selection of books, one, Collins Guide to the Birds of England (?), helped me familiarise myself with the numerous avian visitations. I may well have spent my entire time at Knepp in the tree-house were it not for the numerous activities and dining opportunities within Knepp. We were provided a breakfast hamper with Knepp bacon, eggs, bread and butter and an orange marmalade. While we had the opportunity to cook it at the foot of the treehouse, we chose to cook it in the glamping kitchen which is equipped with gas stoves and all manner of cooking vessels. The bacon was so, so good. We booked a dusk safari on the second night of our stay, and fortunately the weather which had been particularly cold and wet managed to hold off and afford us a unique opportunity to explore areas not accessible to the public. To behold wild pigs and their piglets suckling in a gully completely ignoring our presence was really special. And again, we happened upon a nest of storks settling in for the night, truly a wow moment being comfortably distant, though close enough to it being an intimate moment. Red deer. Fallow deer. Bats. A fox. And as we collected to imbibe in a quiet glass of wine at the end of the safari in the wilderness, as dusk descended, a solitary male Nightingale holding out for a potential mate, serenaded our group. Beautiful. We dined at the Wilderness Kitchen for lunch prior to the evenings safari. The food was truly good. I had hogget (lamb) prepared two ways, slow cooked and sliced roasted fillet - the flavour was an absolute standout. I think it attests to the freely ranging wild diet of the animals, reared at Knepp, as to their flavour. The slow cooked hogget was silk like in texture, divine. The fillet while not so yielding was cooked perfectly with the centre of the fillet rare and the fats rendered beautifully, again a complete flavour bomb. The accompanying side dish of chard cooked with olive oil and spare lemon was spot on. Breakfast at the kitchen on our final day once more was a revelation, the sausage and bacon were quite simply the best I have tasted. Coffee was adept - I drink a double espresso. Incidentally, if you go to the kitchen or store and the coffee van is there, I can vouch the coffee is great, but the miso and Tahini cookies are sublime - a seriously good pairing! My only reservation is that while we were notified to come prepared for wet muddy ground, that is, bring gumboots - it was disappointing to find that prior to the safari, gumboots were available to borrow. For us travelling from Australia, that meant buying gumboots prior to arriving - reality being, there was no way we were going to weigh down our return luggage with said gumboots. Knepp just got themselves a new pair of gumboots. Nevertheless, all said, what a truly great project Knepp is and what a great opportunity to taste some of the fruits of their great work.

Went to catch up w the nightingales but they were all mated up (only males sing at night) so had to be content with a walk about, wonderful sunset and knowing that the population was doing well!
