Hickleton is a village with deep roots in South Yorkshire's history, and Hickleton Hall Estate sits at its heart. Built in 1748, the Grade II listed Georgian property has passed through many lives—it served as a wartime headquarters, later became a girls' boarding school, and has now been restored as holiday accommodation. The hall itself remains a notable landmark, visible from the approach down a sweeping driveway.
The four-bedroom property occupies part of the estate, accessed through a private entrance on the ground floor. The main bedroom on this level has a four-poster king bed and overlooks the grounds; a separate chapel room with a glass ceiling provides natural light and a unique space within the home. Three further king bedrooms are on the lower ground floor, alongside a single shower room. Downstairs also holds the living area with a pool table, and a kitchen with the basics for self-catering—microwave, fridge, coffee machine. The layout can accommodate nine people, and a travel cot and highchair are available if needed.
Essentials like electricity, heating, wi-fi, bed linen and towels are included. The property has its own parking for two cars and opens onto a private garden with patio and seating. One dog is welcome at no extra charge. The 17 acres of grounds and woodland are partly shared with other properties on the estate. St Wilfrid's Church is in the village, and a pub and restaurant are roughly a mile and a half away. No smoking indoors.

A Stay Inside a Piece of History with a Spooky Twist! We had an incredible stay at Hickleton Hall. If you are looking for more than just a place to sleep, this is a total immersion into 18th-century grandeur and local legend. The space you get is staggering. We were a group of 9 and had plenty of room across 4 large bedrooms (one including a sofa bed). The highlight was the huge lounge, which felt like a private club with its pool table and piano. Much of the hall is undergoing a beautiful restoration, but we were impressed that no work was carried out during our stay, making it incredibly peaceful. A special mention to Frank, the site manager—he is an amazing guy, really nice and incredibly helpful throughout our visit. Staying here feels like walking through a history book. Built in the 1740s by James Paine, it was the seat of the Earls of Halifax. One of its most famous residents was Edward Wood (the 3rd Viscount Halifax), who was the Viceroy of India and served as Foreign Secretary during the lead-up to WWII. In fact, the hall served as a military headquarters for the British Army’s I Corps after the evacuation of Dunkirk in 1940. For those into the supernatural, this place is iconic. The 2nd Viscount Halifax was so fascinated by the "other side" that he compiled the famous "Lord Halifax’s Ghost Book" right here. Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson) tutored the children here in the 1850s, and legend says the large gilt mirror in the library—often called the "Alice Mirror"—inspired Through the Looking-Glass. A young girl in a nightdress is still said to be seen in that mirror's reflection, and the "Blue Room" is famous for a woman in a blue shawl who has been seen passing through the walls for over a century. Even with the renovations, the 17 acres of grounds are stunning. You can explore the terraces and the historic "Lady Mary’s Walk" from the 1840s. The sweeping driveway approach really sets the tone for a stay that feels truly "stately." Whether you're here for the history, the ghost stories, or just a massive space for a family getaway, Hickleton Hall is well worth the visit. We loved it!

Beautiful location, gorgeously laid out rooms including the chapel room. Frank was an absolute ledge d and went out of his way during our stay from area knowledge to help on site should we have required it. Will be staying again without a doubt! Might be a ghost or 2 still living in the hall but all were very welcoming
