About The Chesterhouse Hotel

Douglas Central Beach is right outside the door at The Chesterhouse Hotel, and the promenade itself puts pubs, restaurants and other entertainment within easy walking distance, making this a practical base for exploring the town without needing a car once you've arrived.

The hotel has 67 rooms and takes up a stretch of Loch Promenade, with free WiFi and free on-site parking included for those who do drive. Guests have access to a restaurant and lounge bar on site, along with breakfast, a gym, a spa and sauna, and a garden. Extras such as luggage storage, laundry service, porter and concierge support, valet parking and airport transfers are also available, and the hotel can host weddings and meetings in its function spaces.

Rooms are set up for relaxed stays rather than anything showy, with air conditioning and in-room drinks among the standard comforts. With Douglas's seafront restaurants, bars and beach all within reach on foot, the hotel works well as a straightforward, well-located stopover on the Isle of Man.

Ideal location on the front at Douglas, close to the ferry port and shops. Staff were attentive and friendly. I particularly liked them gathering to wave us goodbye. The food was plentiful, well cooked, particularly the carvery meats. As you can imagine in an old Victorian hotel on the front: corridors were narrow, sound could be heard from neighbouring establishments in some rooms and window opening serves as air conditioning in the bedrooms. However, I found this added to the charm. Windows could be opened and staff would provide electric fans if requested.

Our room is big, clean and very quiet. No sea view but not in it much. Water is roasting too. Food is really good. Self serve breakfast and carvery dinner. Entertainment 2 nights out of 4. Any minor problems were dealt with quickly and efficiently. WiFi is good and throughout the hotel. Would happily come back again.

Pros Excellent location. Breakfast was good. Cons The room was unbearably hot. We checked out after one night because the heat made it impossible to stay. Opening the window didn’t help — the noise from the hotel vents directly below was so loud it drowned out the TV. The rooms at the back are extremely small, and combined with the heat, they’re simply not fit for purpose. The manager’s response was dismissive, claiming “not everyone” complains about the heat. One bad review should be enough to address a known issue, not an excuse to ignore it. The corridors are so narrow you have to turn your suitcase sideways, and the lift barely fits two people and a bag. It judders constantly, and after one ride I chose the stairs instead. We were told we could have asked to move rooms, but after reading other reviews (our mistake for not checking sooner), it’s clear the heat problem is widespread. We decided to leave rather than risk another room being the same — and this was only May. I can’t imagine how unbearable it must be in August. The frosted glass at the back makes sense only once you look over the top: the view is of blackened steel chimneys and a neglected yard. It’s not acceptable. We usually stay at The Empress, and I regret not booking there this time. I would never return to this hotel.

This has got to be one of the warmest hotels I've ever experienced, and I've been in sone warm climates. In fact, it was so warm that we had to leave the hotel a day early and book somewhere else because we got zero sleep unfortunately. Hell, they even had the heating on in the hotel room as we entered??? Whyyyyy.... The rooms are tiny as well, it's really uncomfortable and not worth even the cheap price. You get hit by the temperature difference as soon as you enter the hotel itself. The only saving grace was that the breakfast was very nice. There's not a great deal to do in the area as well unfortunately. Would not go back.
