Knocktinkle

Dumfries and Galloway

Castle Douglas sits close to the Dumfries and Galloway coast, where Mossyard and Carrick beaches are a short drive away. Knocktinkle occupies part of a listed Georgian schoolhouse built in the 1790s, now divided into holiday lets. The village of Gatehouse of Fleet, where the property stands, has roots in 19th-century industry—cotton mills, shipbuilding and a brewery once thrived here, though these days visitors come for the quieter appeal of its heritage streets and nearby outdoor pursuits.

Inside, the cottage has been fitted with comfort in mind without losing the character of its age. Downstairs holds a living and dining room with Smart TV, Freesat and Netflix, plus a kitchen equipped for proper cooking—electric oven, gas hob, dishwasher and all the basics. There is a walk-in shower room on the ground floor. Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a king bed, one with a double, and a family bathroom with a slipper bath. Bed linen, towels, electricity and Wi-Fi come as standard, and the heating is gas central. One dog is welcome.

Guests have use of a shared courtyard with seating and a barbecue, plus private parking for two cars. The Mill on the Fleet visitor centre, Cardoness Castle and Laggan Outdoor Activity Centre are all within reach of the village. Check-in is after 4pm, checkout before 10am. Smoking is not permitted inside.

Absolutely stunning views. Just keep an eye open for sheep and cows. They can be quite friendly!!

Fabulous views, but to get to the footpath to the loch you have to walk down the road a bit. An information board would be nice.

Knocktinkle is our go-to starting point for Galloway cycling adventures. Convenient parking, well-maintained trails, and scenic routes make it the perfect launchpad for a wonderful ride to Crossmichael. Every visit guarantees a fantastic day out, capturing the essence of Galloway's beauty. It's a cyclist's haven, and we couldn't be happier with the experience. Highly recommended for a day filled with joy and exploration!
