A single shepherd's hut built from traditional materials, The Shepherd's Rest stands in woodland near Castle Douglas, within easy reach of the Solway coast. The whole building is yours alone, arranged on the ground floor across one open-plan space: a living area warmed by a wood burner, a kitchen with gas hob and fridge, a bedroom with a double bed, and a shower room. Three steps lead to the entrance. Electricity, bed linen and towels are provided, along with a welcome pack and extras for dogs.
The hut has an enclosed front garden with seating and furniture. One car can park on site. The surrounding woodland is home to red squirrels, deer and pheasants. Smoking is not permitted due to the woodland setting. Castle Douglas and its restaurants, shops and attractions are nearby; Auchencairn village is less than a mile away. This suits couples, or anyone wanting solitude among trees with the option of coastal walks and countryside exploration close by.

The place and location was amazing. The only downside was we have a small dog and she could easily get out of the garden and we were concerned as we saw a dog on its own wandering about.

The hut was immaculate and had everything we needed for us and the pooch. Communication was great and we were left to our own devices which was perfect with an anxious dog. We had a lovely long weekend and would have happily stayed longer. Great walks from the door, and lovely evenings with the firepit. A great find and well worth a visit.

Highly recommend this place. The hut itself was clean, spacious for 2 and a dog (if applicable) and stocked. Myself, my partner and our dog Venom (Great Dane) stayed for 6 nights. Has a log burner with food and all necessities if needed in the colder months and also an outside firepit, again, with logs and burning materials provided. There was a bbq also, which was great for a summer stay. The views all around were stunning, with lovely kind visitors from cows, deer, hare, pheasants, birds of prey, bats and lots of different birds. The hut itself is fenced off with a fence and small gate going all around the hut and patio for securing dogs and the driveway and small private woodland is also fenced off and gated away from track and cow fields. This was perfect for our pooch who loves to have an explore and gave us peace of mind he was not be able to get out to any oncoming vehicles (albeit there was barely any traffic at all!) or any of the fields. The location is perfect, quiet at night and even during the day. We did lots of nature walks, woodland walks and hikes, as well as trips to the different beaches. Highly recommend if a peaceful, stress free getaway is what you need and want!!
