Just back from Hobbiton, this Lord of the Rings themed Howf was really good. We booked Bag end which was the last Howf along a gravel path and down a wee hill. Park your car in the carpark then grab a wheel barrow for your things and head along to Bag end past the treehouse and Gandalfs cart then down the wee hill. The Howf itself was large (but if like me at 6' 4", look out for the two main beams which are about 6'1" tall) There is a log burner for heat. There are more logs available for purchase in the shop. The inside was well designed and of course "Hobbit" themed. There is a bath tub and sink for washing (unlike the other Howfs on site, this one doesn't have a walk in shower, it has a hand held shower attached to the bath) and a two burner cooker (gas) for cooking. The toilet is attached to the Howf, you have to go outside to use it. It is an eco friendly toilet which requires a little getting used to. Both Gents and ladies have to sit, then use saw dust afterwards, no flushing. This was the first time we had used a toilet like this, like I said a bit weird at first but you get used to it. Look out for the toads hopping about outside as it gets very dark, bring extra torches with you. Although there is a torch supplied inside along with battery bedside lanterns. There are electric ceiling lights in the Howf and toilet. Also a plug socket in the Howf behind the front door and one in the toilet for charging your mobile phone. A couple of nice touches were, the Lord of the Rings theme tune that plays in the toilet and up at Gandalfs cart and the hidden wooden mice in the Howf, I think we found them all. In the fields either side are a plethora of farm animals along with a few exotics. Bring fly killer with you to spray if the midges are out in force. There is a well stocked honesty shop through the garden and behind the family house, look for the wee green shop sign pointing you in the correct direction. Keys to the Howf were in a plastic envelope in the courtyard opposite the carpark, round to the left under the archway ontop of a barrel, you return the key back here after your stay. We briefly met with the owners in the carpark and found them to be polite and very friendly. Looking for a unique, something a bit different holiday stay? Then look no further, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely come back.

My wife and I stayed in the Wee Tree Howf on the first two nights of our honeymoon. It was the perfect retreat from a busy wedding weekend. Craighead is a lovely retreat. It is your childhood tree house upgraded into an idyllic escape from the world. We arrived right around sunset and the golden light made checking in even more magical. Aside from occasionally seeing your neighbors if there are other guests, your only company is the animals here who only add to the charm. The tree howf was cozy, but not too cramped. The view of the small lake from the windows and the front porch was magical, only beat by the view from the back porch of rolling hills and mountains spotted with sheep and cows. The only downside was the mattress on the bed. It has seen better days. It is glamping, so expect that. The trees howf is warmed by a woodstove that is more than adequate, and cooled by open windows. There is a compost toilet slightly removed on a different branch, but also a shower and bath tub for use. I was pleasantly surprised that there were outlets for charging phones and other electronics.

We can't recommend this place highly enough. We stayed in Bagend- a wee hobbit house - it was perfect in every respect. Heather and Ian have thought of everything to give you a perfect stay.
