Photo: Rivers Edge Cottage

Rivers Edge Cottage is a single-storey conversion on the banks of the River Derwent, close enough to Durham and Newcastle for day trips but set in countryside where the river itself becomes your immediate neighbour. The cottage sleeps four across two bedrooms—a kingsize and two singles—with one bathroom. Everything you need is supplied: wifi, heating, fresh linen and towels, plus a kitchen equipped for cooking proper meals rather than holiday shortcuts.

Inside, the living room has a smart TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. The bathroom is the cottage's most distinctive feature: a circular room that sets it apart from standard holiday lets. Outdoors, there is a private garden with terrace, sitting-out area, garden furniture and a barbecue. You have space for two cars on the property. The location means serious walkers can head straight onto the riverbank; Hamsterley Forest nearby is known for mountain biking and hiking, while Derwent Reservoir and the Derwent Walk—following an old railway line—are both within reach. Beamish Museum, a living history attraction exploring North East life across centuries, is nearby. No smoking inside the cottage.

This is a fantastic find, a beautiful cottage and garden nestled by the river Derwent.. It's very peaceful and quiet and only about a mile from the centre of Shotley Bridge.. Owners couldn't be more helpful and accommodating.. Highly recommended, will definitely be back...

We recently had our second stay at Rivers Edge Cottage. The cottage is beautiful, in a fantastic setting. The addition of a top quality shower, since our first visit, only adds to what is already great accommodation. If you are planning a trip to this lovely part of the country, I would highly recommend that you book in here. The walks along the river are so quiet and peaceful. Thanks again Jean for making it such a memorable stay!

This is a beautiful, comfortable and welcoming warm cottage which is very well serviced by the lovely owner who lives in the main house on the site. It is adjoining the Derwent with riverside walks starting a few yards away and the high open countryside all around. Loads of interesting places to visit and the beautiful towns of Corbridge and Hexham less than half an hour away and both Durham and Newcastle in easy reach. We visit the Northumbria often and have been here twice and will come again. Thoroughly recommended.
