What visitors say
Tucked away on the southern ridge of Harlow, Parndon Wood Nature Reserve is a stunning 50-acre sanctuary of ancient woodland that has remained largely unchanged for over 900 years. This Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) is a rare example of a traditional Essex landscape, featuring a towering canopy of mature oaks and an understory of hornbeam coppice. Walking through Parndon Wood feels like stepping back into medieval England, where the air is cool and the forest floor is a complex carpet of rare fungi, bluebells, and ancient woodland flora. The reserve is a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts, offering three strategically placed observation hides that look out over peaceful ponds and "non-intervention" areas. Here, you can sit in silence and wait for a glimpse of Fallow or Muntjac deer, or watch for the vibrant flash of a Great Spotted Woodpecker. Managed by the local charity ECCO, the wood serves as an outdoor classroom with a dedicated Conservation Centre, where visitors of all ages can learn about the delicate balance of forest ecosystems. From its giant carved "Storytelling Chair" to the winding, atmospheric nature trails, Parndon Wood is a place where nature is both protected and celebrated. Tips for your visit: • The Bird Hides: Even if you aren't a serious birder, visit the pond-side hide. It’s one of the most peaceful spots in the reserve and offers a front-row seat to the daily lives of the wood's feathered residents. • The Burrow Café: Located in the Conservation Centre, this cozy café is a local favorite for a hot drink or a light snack after exploring the trails. • Den Building: If you’re visiting with children, head to the designated den-building area near the entrance. It’s a fantastic space for kids to get hands-on with nature. • Check the Calendar: The reserve is usually closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (except Bank Holidays), so plan your trip for later in the week to ensure the Conservation Centre and facilities are open. Parndon Wood Nature Reserve is a soulful and historic escape that offers a true "deep forest" experience just a stone's throw from the modern world. 🌳🦌🦉

It's a lovely area but no dogs are allowed in the park. It doesn't reflect anything on the ark itself. It reflects on Google's inability to suggest appropriate places. However, on the other side of th cemetery there is miles and miles of woods to walk with the dogs. 😊

Nice couple of trails to walk here and the terrain is suitable for baby pushchairs. The forest is very picturesque and calming and the centre itself has activities for children. The only thing lacking is a souvenir gift shop but the friendly staff provide low price drinks and snacks.
