About Lee Valley Almost Wild Campsite

Nestled close to the Hertfordshire–Essex border, this peaceful back-to-basics site delivers on its 'Almost Wild' promise with gorgeous riverside and woodland pitches, each with its own fire pit. The natural setting feels genuinely secluded despite being just a quarter-mile from Broxbourne station – making it remarkably accessible for car-free campers arriving from London. Water surrounds the site on three sides, and a riverside pub, watersports centre and boat hire are all within easy walking distance.

Facilities are deliberately pared back to compost toilets (surprisingly clean, say guests) and not much else, encouraging you to spend time soaking up the all-natural vibes rather than queuing for showers. Hammocks are welcome between the trees, barbecues and campfires encouraged. The friendly staff provide helpful local tips, and Broxbourne's shops and takeaways are close by when you need them. It's an adults-only site that also welcomes DofE groups and student expeditions – perfect for those seeking a wilder pitch without venturing too far from civilisation.

What visitors say

Thomas Butterworth

We have been coming to this campsite for many years and have always thoroughly enjoyed our stays. Unfortunately, this year felt quite different. The biggest disappointment was the change in management. When I politely asked about some of the changes to the site, the new host came across as rather abrupt. His interpersonal skills could certainly be improved. The previous, older gentleman who managed the campsite was always warm, welcoming, and made the whole site feel well run. When we arrived at our pitch, although it was in a lovely location, it was completely covered in swan, duck, and other bird droppings. When I mentioned this, I was told it was too hot for the host to clean it and was simply handed a shovel to do it myself before we could pitch our tent. I didn't feel this was an acceptable level of customer service. The campsite itself has also changed in appearance. It feels less wild and natural than it used to, with pitches opened up so there is much less privacy and people can easily look into your pitch. On Saturday night, loud music could be heard from across the river at the local traveller site, which affected the peaceful atmosphere we have always associated with this campsite. Overall, it was disappointing to see how much the experience has changed. The previous host created a much warmer, friendlier environment, and the campsite felt far better managed. Sadly, this visit did not live up to the high standards we had come to expect over the years.

almost wild camping was a great experience! booked last min the night of as an activity with my partner and son, spoke to very helpful ladies in the office who sorted us out right away. upon arrival we were greeted by a lovely man who showed us around, gave us lots of info about the site, local pubs and told us all about where to go for walks and recommending local spots en route. he even told my son and partner about birds we can look out for and where their nests are in the trees. the price was super cheap and all items purchasable on site were very well priced as well. the pitch was lovely, very clean and the site is very well maintained and looked after. the toilets were surprisingly clean and not awful at all as you expect normally from a camp site. we are only 20 mins away so we will definitely be visiting often now. we went for a lovely morning walk along the river where we saw so many cute birds with their little chicks, so sweet!! highly recommend this site for people and their older children. you're literally left to get on with it yourself after the introduction which is exactly what we wanted! thanks so much for having us. see you soon!

A real gem 💎 of a campsite. Very quiet at times The firewood we ordered was waiting for us. Clean and tidy site. Warden was polite and insightful. I'm glad for the restriction on the ages of children due to the fact there's a lot of water surrounding the park. Most beautiful campsite I've stayed at. Will be coming again

Scenic riverside campsite. Amazing to find such natural surroundings so close to London. The river Lea navigation is close by so ideal for an overnight bikepacking or backpacking experience.
