Harrow Lodges John O’Groats - Swona

Photo: Harrow Lodges

Thurso sits at the edge of Scotland's north coast, where the landscape is raw and the horizons seem endless. Swona, a detached lodge, occupies a position on this stretch that feels genuinely remote—a hundred metres from the shoreline, with uninterrupted views across the water to Orkney. The property sits on a rough track; the building itself is accessed at ground level, making it straightforward to move between rooms, though the decking beyond has steps up. Four guests fit comfortably across two bedrooms: one with a double bed and ensuite toilet, the other with two singles and a separate shower room.

The main living space is open plan, centred around large glass doors that frame the sea view. A wood-burning stove, Smart TV with Netflix, and a kitchen equipped for proper cooking—gas range, dishwasher, proper fridge—mean you're set up for anything from rainy afternoons indoors to preparing a feast. The enclosed decking is the heart of the outdoor experience: fully fenced, with seating and a six-person hot tub that becomes especially appealing on cool evenings. Wi-Fi, heating, electricity, bed linen and towels are all included. One dog is welcome and stays free.

This corner of the coast offers serious appeal for walkers and wildlife watchers. Dunnet Beach lies within walking distance. John O'Groats is five miles south, Thurso ten miles further. Scrabster, with its ferry terminal to Orkney, is nearby. The area suits families, couples, or anyone after an undistracted spell on the Scottish coast—though the rough access track and coastal weather are part of the reality, not obstacles to smooth away.

The lodge is in a stunning location & has a private hot tub. You drive along a single track road to get to it but its a smooth road with parking right at the door. Its one of 2 which sit beside each other & the owner left a welcome pack which was nice. Theres a couple if nice walks you dont need the car for but you will need to drive to get to most places. If your looking for peaceful it's perfect. 1/2 hr drive from both Thurso & Wick

Had a great short break here recently. The lodge was clean and in good condition with all necessary facilities. The welcome basket was a nice touch with useful items. The hot tub was nice and secluded which is great compared to other lodges we have stayed in. Fantastic views from the front of the lodge and was fun watching the seals playing in their natural habitat. If we’re back in the area, would stay again.

We stayed in Burray for 7 nights in July and enjoyed every second. The lodge is spacious and really well appointed with everything you could want or need for a few days away. It's a real home from home with a full size fridge and freezer and a dishwasher in the well-equipped kitchen. Plenty of hot water and great pressure in the shower, plus a second toilet, which was handy to have. The hot tub and the telescope are added extras that make this place special. Had the pleasure of meeting Gemma and Sandy (the owners) who were friendly and clearly very caring. There is a view from every window and a real feeling of peace and quiet. Will absolutely be staying here again in the future!

The lodge is in a great spot for sightseeing or just unwinding somewhere quiet. Great views and the telescope in the lounge was a welcome find. Very clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. The hot tub is an added luxury and even sat out in the rain it's a great way to relax and unwind after a long drive a day out or just because you can!
