Rispond Estate - The Byre
Highland
The far northwest of Scotland around Durness feels genuinely remote—mountains, sea lochs, and a coastline that stretches unbroken toward the open Atlantic. The Byre sits on a 200-acre estate down a private road, surrounded by that landscape. The stone building itself is historic, converted into a self-contained holiday home with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, sleeping four.
Inside, the layout centres on a double-height sitting area with a vaulted ceiling and direct views toward the harbour and hills; a spiral staircase connects the upper sitting space to the main living quarters below, where leather sofas, Harris Tweed furnishings and wooden floors frame the open-plan living and dining room. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, and French windows open onto a sheltered courtyard. One bedroom has a double bed, the other has zip-and-link twins that can be joined into a superking on request. Both en-suite bathrooms are private to the bedrooms—one with a bath and shower, one with a shower. Bed linen, towels, wifi and electricity are included; a welcome pack of local produce arrives to get you started.
Wildlife is constant here: deer, otters, golden eagles and seals move through the estate regularly. The nearest sandy beach at Ceannabeinne is a short walk away. Durness village is four miles on, with a small supermarket, award-winning coffee shop, chocolatier and a hotel bar. The property does not permit smoking.
