The Grain Store

Photo: The Grain Store

This converted Highland cottage sits on elevated ground above Loch Ruthven, an RSPB nature reserve known for Slavonian grebes, red kites, buzzards and red deer. The location is relatively remote—a quiet corner of Strathnairn, south of Loch Ness—yet only 25 minutes' drive from Inverness town centre. Stac Gorm rises across the water, and the surrounding landscape shows the marks of glacial activity: scarred boulders dot the loch edge and woodland slopes. A single dog can stay with you at no extra charge.

Everything is on the ground floor. Two bedrooms sleep four: one has a king bed with a 32" Smart TV, the other a zip-and-link super king (or two singles on request) with the same. The living room opens to a 55" Smart TV and a wood burner with initial logs provided. Kitchen equipment includes a dishwasher, American fridge freezer, electric oven and hob, plus a coffee machine. A walk-in shower serves the single bathroom. Wi-Fi, electricity, bed linen and towels come as standard. If you drive an electric car, a 7-kilowatt Type 2 charging point can be arranged for an additional cost, with a 3-metre cable on site.

The cottage works well for couples or small families wanting to explore this quiet part of the Highlands, or as a base for the North Coast 500 route. Walking trails lead into the nature reserve and around the loch itself. There is a communal quad garden (shared with other properties) and parking for one car on site.
