Huddersfield's places to stay tell you a fair amount about the town before you've even arrived. Solid, comfortable hotels like the Clarion Cedar Court, Briar Court and the Edgerton Hotel sit alongside smaller, more personal options such as Ashfield Hotel and Highfields Town House, while out towards the Pennines there's A Place In The Pennines for those who'd rather wake up to hills than traffic. It's a spread that suits both the visitor here for business in the town centre and the one who's come for the moors.
That town centre and the surrounding countryside are really two different sides of Huddersfield, and most visitors end up moving between them. Stay centrally at somewhere like Huddersfield Central Lodge or Fortune Huddersfield Sure Hotel Collection and you're close to the shops and restaurants; venture further out towards Bagden Hall Hotel and you're already in more rural, golf-course-and-gardens territory.
Above the town, Castle Hill and its Victoria Tower are the obvious landmark, with views out across the valley that explain why people bother with the climb. Beaumont Park gives a gentler, greener option for the same kind of escape. History is well represented too, through the Colne Valley Museum, which digs into the area's textile past. Families are looked after by places like Town Playcafé, Chez-Play and Whistlestop Valley, while The Selfie Studio and Kirkburton Pottery Barn offer something a bit different for an afternoon.
It's a town that works equally well as a short town-centre break or as a base for exploring the wider Pennine landscape, and the range of hotels, the single well-placed campsite, and the sheer number of restaurants all point to a place that's used to looking after visitors with very different plans for their day.
