What visitors say
Our visit to Christchurch Mansion was a little unscheduled - with a bit of time to spare before we was due to the theatre we thought a visit to the mansion would be a good idea. Entry to the mansion is free, and there are a fair few rooms to see. With small people in tow, we did speed through a few of them but I was surprised on how big it was. My daughter did use one of the discovery bags for a part of the visit (rolling a dice and finding objects). There are facilities if needed, as well as a gift shop and a cafe. We will likely visit again, and if more time perhaps a nice walk round the park as well!

A jewel in our town. Learn about the history of the mansion with its free entry and exhibits. Gainsborough paintings and visiting exhibits in the Wolsey gallery. 42 rooms to see. Had a free tour by Sue today. Very informative. I learnt a lot of local history and links to aristocracy in England.

Christchurch Mansion is a real hidden gem in Ipswich—a beautifully preserved Tudor mansion set within the lovely Christchurch Park. It’s the kind of place that quietly exceeds expectations. The building itself is stunning, with its red-brick exterior and period details that immediately transport you back in time. Inside, the rooms are richly decorated and thoughtfully curated, giving a strong sense of what life was like across different historical periods. The blend of history and art is especially well done, with an impressive collection that includes works by Constable and Gainsborough. One of the best parts is how accessible and relaxed it feels. It’s free to enter, not overly crowded, and easy to explore at your own pace. The surrounding park is also perfect for a walk before or after your visit. Whether you’re interested in history, art, or just looking for a peaceful cultural stop, it’s absolutely worth your time if you’re in Ipswich.
