Camping in Ipswich

Ipswich itself has no campsites within the built-up area, but the Suffolk countryside on its doorstep more than makes up for it, with touring parks and farm-based sites scattered along the River Orwell and out towards Felixstowe and Woodbridge. Most of the genuine options are within a fifteen-minute drive of the centre, close enough for day trips into town but properly rural once you're back at the pitch.

The land here is gentle rather than dramatic: flat arable fields, hedgerows and the wide tidal reaches of the Orwell and Deben estuaries, both popular with walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers. Sites tend to be small, family-run affairs rather than large holiday parks, with a straightforward offer of grass pitches, electric hook-ups and a shower block rather than swimming pools and entertainment programmes; camping here is generally about the surroundings rather than the facilities.

The coast is close enough to build a trip around: Felixstowe's beach and container port are about twenty minutes from most of the sites below, while Woodbridge and the Deben estuary, Sutton Hoo and the Suffolk Heritage Coast around Aldeburgh are all comfortably reachable for a day out. Inland, Jimmy's Farm, Trinity Park and the National Cycle Network routes that criss-cross the area make for an easy alternative when the weather turns.

Booking ahead is sensible for July and August and around the Ipswich Maritime Festival in June, when both town hotels and the surrounding campsites see a spike in demand; outside peak season, most of the sites below take a more relaxed approach to passing trade. The three sites listed here are all currently trading, family or independently run, and within easy striking distance of the town centre.
