Carisbrooke Castle

An impressive castle with so much history packed into one place. Walking the outer walls gives gorgeous 360-degree views across the countryside, and meeting the famous donkeys in the well-house was iconic. Plenty of open space, a great little café, and friendly staff throughout. Easily worth 2–3 hours of your day!

Really nice castle to visit, the biggest left in the isle of wight. The staff are welcoming with gun tasting in entry. The grounds are and museum in sure is fascinating with plenty to see. The walls and towers you can walk make it fun for all however wear suitable shoes as we went in the rain and it was a little slippy in parts.

This castle and museum are a wonderful place to spend half a day. Parking is easy, about 200 yards from the entrance. There's a useful and humorous introductory film show. The castle itself is magnificent, with a great walk round the ramparts. Whether you enjoy the story of the castle's owners and its development, the gardens (Princess Beatrice, youngest child of Queen Victoria) or the donkey demonstrating water being extracted from the well, there's something for all ages. The café is tucked away in a beautiful little courtyard. In addition, you need to allow time for the castle museum, which is not managed by English Heritage, but is nevertheless amazing. They care for 35,000 items from the whole of the Isle of Wight, including a painting by Turner, a lock of hair from Charles I, and you can stand in the bedroom where Charles I slept. It's altogether a worthwhile visit.

We enjoyed our visit. It was easy to find and plenty of parking (on a Friday). Entry through the castle shop with a warm welcome. Princess Beatrice's garden was smaller than I thought it would be and unfortunately not many flowers during our visit (in May). The well talk was good (although it was unfortunate there was a problem with the wheel on our visit so didn't see it working with the donkey). We went to the donkey stables too on the way to the (small) tea room. The walk of the walls gave good 360 views! And the Keep was worth a visit, despite the steep steps up!! The museum was a mis-mash of things which we unfortunately didn't enjoy/appreciate as much as others might. We didn't do the moat walk around the outside of the castle but I would if visited again for a different perspective of the castle
