Back-to-basics clifftop camping above Compton Bay, campfires allowed

About Compton Farm

Compton Farm occupies a fold in the chalk downs above Compton Bay, about as stripped-back as campsites get in England. This National Trust tenant farm offers unmarked pitches in an open field sheltered by the slope but exposed to salt wind, with composting loos, cold taps and nothing else—no showers, no electric, no shop. What it does allow is campfires, a rarity that draws people back summer after summer.

The location makes up for the lack of creature comforts. Compton Bay, one of the island's finest surf beaches, is a few minutes' walk downhill; at low tide the cliffs reveal dinosaur footprints and fossils. The coastal path runs directly past, linking Tennyson Down and the Needles to the west with Brighstone eastward. Tents and small campervans manage the ground well; larger outfits struggle.

Bring water containers, a decent stove and warm layers—clear nights are cold even in high summer. The season runs Easter to September, with pitches from around £12 per adult. Book direct and pack for being genuinely off-grid.

Everything was as perfect as it seemed online. Anna is the most thoughtful, gracious host. She provided us with all the information we needed and showed us around. The Campervan/Motorhome is just perfect! Kitchen is compact and contains everything one needs. The beds in both bedrooms are comfortable, bathroom and living room are excellent. Location is incredible very close to Compton Chine, Freshwater, and the Needles. We had a great stay!

What a beautiful site! It was more than I expected. The location is stunning, I'm an islander and still am in awe of some of our little treasures and compton farm is one of them. It's so peaceful and the views are stunning. My children loved interacting with the animals there. The facilities were clean and convenient. So glad we found this little gem and will definitely be back.

This campsite is the best you can find on Isle of Wight! The farm is in the South the best part of the island from my opinion. You can see the cliff from the farm and the view is really breathtaking. You have lots of space for your vehicle, good services like toilet, BBQ, tables, etc and lovely owners. Definitely recommend it!

What a way to spend your weekend on the island. The sites sits in the valley and is 10 min walk away from the Compton Beach. It's been run by the same family since before 1975! Ana who runs the farm now was amazing. There was a burger stall on Saturday evening. Highly recommend this place!
