About The Coledale Inn

For travellers wanting fell walks by day and a proper fire-warmed pub by night, The Coledale Inn in Keswick fits the bill neatly. Set with mountain views and a garden looking out over the surrounding hills, it makes a natural base for hiking around Catbells and Derwentwater, and the free on-site parking and dog-friendly policy suit those arriving by car with muddy boots and four-legged companions in tow.

The 20 rooms are en-suite, with family and accessible options available, and the atmosphere throughout leans cosy rather than smart, with log fires adding to the welcome. Staff are attentive and the pace is unhurried. The restaurant and bar serve generous, hearty food, with the steak and ale pie a particular favourite and vegetarian options handled well; breakfast and packed lunches are also available for those heading straight out onto the trails.

Outdoor seating in the garden makes the most of the views, and with pubs, restaurants and walking and cycling routes nearby, there is plenty to fill a stay beyond the inn itself. It suits those after a straightforward, comfortable base rather than a luxury retreat.

Went there for food. My sister and I got the sea bass. A few others got the pie. The pie honestly was really good and maybe warranted the £20 price tag, but the sea bass at £24 was honestly pretty shameful. Fish and prawns were reasonably tasty, but only came when a little bit of garlic butter, that was completely absorbed by the bed of simple, unseasoned, boiled and crushed potatoes. Sat next to some veg that had barely been boiled so rock hard, and again, no attempt at adding anything with a little flavour. Could've sautéed the veg with some oil and herbs. But no, wartime standard cooking. Boiled in water for 2 mins. Could've broken a tooth on it. For this price, you just HAVE to do better. It's not on.

Went for a roast dinner after a hike up Grisedale pike! Was an amazing location for it right near the end. The staff were lovely and very welcoming, we sat in the beer garden as it was so warm. I enjoyed most of the roast, but the veg really lacked flavour. They just seems to have been boiled and put on, which is abit of a shame. But all and all a lovely place for some food and drinks after a big hike.

What a cosy, welcoming and happy Inn. We brought our puppy with us. The Inn is very dog friendly, they accommodate the dogs in the bar and restaurant. Good place to socialise your dog or meet dogs. The breakfast was delicious. Lots of veggie options!! They gave us a key for the front door incase our puppy needed the loo in the night. There was a pretty river a 2 minute walk from the inn where I took my pup to explore. Rooms were clean and a good temperature. They also had a communal lounge to use to play chess/ board games. We went at the beginning of April, we were aiming to climb scaffel but the weather had different plans. Would have been a 30 minute drive to seathwaite car park/ hike.
