About The George Hotel

The George occupies a white-fronted building on St John's Street that has been an inn since long before Keswick became a tourist destination, with parts of the structure dating back to the 1500s. It sits a few steps from the Moot Hall and the market square, making it about as central a base as Keswick offers, and it has kept the character of a working coaching inn rather than smoothing everything into a generic hotel finish.

Bedrooms are individually decorated, some with beams and uneven floors that come with a building this old, and range from compact doubles to larger rooms suited to families. The ground floor pub is a genuine local as well as a hotel bar, with open fires, real ales and a solid menu of pub classics alongside more substantial evening dishes.

Its location means almost everything in Keswick is within a two or three minute walk, from the lake shore to the bus station, which suits visitors who want to explore on foot and don't need to worry about parking once they've arrived.

Absolutely fantastic experience at The George! The food was outstanding — fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal. A special mention has to go to Chris, who served us all evening. He was friendly, attentive, and went above and beyond to make sure everything was perfect. Excellent customer service really made the visit stand out. Couldn’t fault a thing and will definitely be returning soon. Highly recommend to anyone looking for great food, great service, and a brilliant pub atmosphere!

Stayed for one night and booked direct from the website. Although breakfast was an additional fee on the website, we were later told that this was included as we booked directly, which was great, but maybe this should be stated on the website? Cosy bar and restaurant, which was clean and the staff were very nice. Food and drink was reasonably priced and was decent pub grub and you can order using the app if you want. The room was large and had everything you needed. It was a little dated and was in need of a spruce up, especially in the bathroom,, where some of the tiles need regrouting and there was a crack / foot sized hole in the bathroom cabinet. Breakfast was good. The large breakfast is certainly large! You help yourself to tea and coffee, but I think this is the first time that I have stayed where fruit juice, fruit, cerials or croissants were not there to help yourself to. This certainly isnt an assue to us, but I know a lot of people like this. We would certainly stay again and already looking at booking again between christmas and the new year

The food was good. They were showing the football but on a projector screen which moved in the wind. People were walking in front of the projector not realising it was obscuring the view. A physical TV would have been a better option set up in advance. Otherwise very friendly staff.

Food was the best that we had eaten all week. The menu choice was great and portion size was more than enough. Staff were lovely and friendly.

Diners like this pub's delicious and hearty food, including Sunday roasts and steak and ale pie, with generous portion sizes and good value. They also highlight the welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, and convenient central location.

Some reviews mention the rooms can be neglected.
