Llanrug

Llanrug has relatively little accommodation of its own, but its position just outside Caernarfon and close to Llanberis means hotels, guest houses and inns are never far away. Booking ahead is sensible in summer, particularly around Snowdon-adjacent towns like Llanberis, when walkers and climbers fill rooms well in advance. Self-catering cottages and farmhouse B&Bs scattered around the Llanrug and Llanberis countryside are often the most characterful choice, giving direct access to footpaths and quiet lanes while keeping Caernarfon's shops, restaurants and railway station within easy reach.

Llanrug is a small village, so most of its appeal lies in what is within easy reach rather than grand attractions in the village itself. That said, there is enough close by to fill several days without moving the car far.

• St Michael's Church (Eglwys Sant Mihangel) — the historic parish church that gave the old settlement its name, Llanfihangel-y-Rug, standing a short walk from the modern village centre.

Those wanting more variety are best served by heading into Caernarfon, a short drive away, where the walled town has a much wider spread of cafes, restaurants and takeaways.

Camping around Llanrug puts you right at the foot of Eryri (Snowdonia), with sites scattered through the farmland and forestry between Caernarfon and Llanberis. The terrain here rises quickly from gentle riverside fields near the village to the rugged, rocky ground of the national park proper, so pitches range from sheltered, family-friendly meadows to more basic, exposed spots higher up. The best season for camping near Llanrug runs from late spring to early autumn, broadly May to September, when the weather is at its most settled and the long daylight hours suit both lakeside relaxation at Llyn Padarn and full days on the surrounding hills. Even in summer, Eryri's weather can turn quickly, so a sturdy, weatherproof tent and warm layers are worth packing whatever the forecast. Many local sites cater well for families and dog walkers, with easy access to gentle riverside and forest walks around Llanrug itself, while sites closer to Llanberis and the Nant Peris valley suit those planning to tackle Snowdon or the surrounding ridges.

For those who prefer a roof over their head without a full hotel stay, glamping has grown steadily across this part of Gwynedd, with shepherd's huts, wooden pods and safari-style tents appearing on farms around Llanrug, Waunfawr and Llanberis. These typically offer a comfortable middle ground, proper beds and sometimes a wood burner or small kitchen, while keeping guests close to the fields, forests and mountain views that make this corner of North Wales so popular with outdoor visitors.
