About Zedwell Underground Tottenham Court Rd

Zedwell Underground Tottenham Court Rd takes a deliberately different approach to hotel design: its 187 rooms sit below ground, built without windows to create a fully dark, soundproofed sleeping space rather than a conventional city bedroom. The result is a minimalist, cocoon-like feel that suits travellers wanting proper rest in the middle of London rather than a view.

Rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, drinks and the usual comforts, with family rooms available for those travelling in a group. Free WiFi and luggage storage are provided throughout, and staff are on hand to help with anything guests need. Some rooms can pick up noise from nearby corridors or the street above, so light sleepers may notice this despite the soundproofing.

The location on Great Russell Street puts guests close to Tottenham Court Road and the British Museum, with pubs, bars, restaurants and other entertainment all within easy reach. It works well as a straightforward, well-placed base for exploring the city, offering clean, comfortable rooms at a reasonable price rather than frills.

The location of this hotel was amazing, we were close to the theatres, shopping and only a few tube stops away from Kings Cross. There were so many places to eat in the surrounding area. The beds were comfortable and I liked the total darkness of the room, the perfect place to be in a heat wave. We didn't experience a weird smell as some have said and the aircon in the room worked great, so even though there were no windows we didn't feel claustrophobic, more cocooned as the room name suggests. Only a few things could be improved: a shelf above the sink to put your toiletries, a small rail to hang clothes and a hairdryer! I know it's budget, but come on, even Travelodge have hairdryers! I also think the hotel should be a bit more honest about the noise from the tube trains in some of the rooms, we could hear them (and feel the vibration) every few minutes in our room (4010). We liked it, it was atmospheric and the white noise helped us sleep, but this might not be the same for everyone, and I noticed in some of the hotels responses to reviews they almost seemed to say it was unusual for the trains to be heard and they'd investigate their sound proofing, but I don't think there's any way of soundproofing against that, it's an underground hotel near the underground, trains will be heard! But you don't hear any street noise or London traffic. Overall a really comfortable budget hotel for a 1 or 2 night stay, we would return if we could get a similar good price (it averaged out at £110 a night, which for this location was superb).

A Great Concept, Poorly Executed Stayed for four nights, and what should have been a unique hotel experience turned into one of the most disappointing stays I've had. The hotel is built around a simple but compelling concept: silence, darkness, and the perfect environment for a restful night's sleep. It is an excellent idea. Unfortunately, the reality falls far short of the promise. Our room, located on level -5, was exceptionally small. The layout was cramped, with the bed on one side and the bathroom on the other. Storage was almost non-existent, just two wall hooks for clothes. No wardrobe, shelves, drawers, or bedside table. Guests are effectively expected to keep their belongings on the floor, which, in our case, was not even properly cleaned. The bathroom was equally disappointing. The sink was so small and the metal mixer tap so poorly positioned that I actually hit my face on it while trying to wash. Every use either resulted in water splashing everywhere or another encounter with the faucet. The shower had no effective water barrier, leaving the bathroom floor soaked after every shower. The shower gel dispenser was empty, and due to poor ventilation and constant humidity, towels never dried throughout our stay. However, the biggest failure is the hotel's core promise: silence. The sound insulation is simply inadequate. We could clearly hear our neighbours using the toilet. To make matters worse, our room was located next to the building's pump system and directly above the Northern Line railway. Every few minutes, trains passed beneath the room, creating noticeable noise and vibration, accompanied by the constant humming of mechanical equipment. The irony is impossible to ignore: a hotel that markets itself as the ultimate place to sleep delivered four consecutive sleepless nights. This is not a minor inconvenience, it is a fundamental failure of the hotel's concept. When your entire brand is based on exceptional sleep, there is no room for poor acoustic insulation. Design and aesthetics cannot compensate for noise, uncomfortable room ergonomics, and basic maintenance issues. And please, don't respond with the standard "we're sorry, we'll investigate" message that appears under so many other reviews. Judging by the number of guests reporting the same problems, this is not an isolated incident. These are structural shortcomings that require real improvements, not template responses. The concept is excellent. The execution is not. Until the hotel addresses its acoustic insulation, ventilation, and room functionality, it cannot genuinely claim to offer the peaceful night's sleep it promises.

Had a lovely stay - it was perfect for a single traveler who just needed some cool and quiet. Stayed during the heatwave but thanks to the underground setting and the air-con I was able to take the afternoons off and relax. The rooms are very simple, just a bed and a bathroom, but the bed was big and very comfortable (I booked a king bed for myself, which wasn't much more expensive than the double.) Just a few small details for people visiting or for management to follow up on; (1) the shower is fairly open to the rest of the bathroom, so either water gets everywhere or the bathmat gets soaked and (2) linen changes only happen after 4 days, so if you're staying that long make sure you're taking care of your sheets. Other than that, I adored this place. The concept isn't for everyone, but as someone who prioritizes relaxation when I travel it met all of my needs. Will definitely book again next time I'm in London.

We had to leave after one night because of the room conditions. This was one of the most disappointing hotel experiences I have ever had. The air conditioning in our room was not working and could not be repaired. On top of that, the room had a very strong, unpleasant smell. The combination of heat, lack of fresh air and the odour made the room unbearable for me. I suffer from panic attacks, and the room conditions triggered severe dizziness and acute anxiety. I understand that this is a personal medical issue, but the environment made it impossible for me to stay safely. To be fair, the reception staff were polite, empathetic and genuinely tried to help. Unfortunately, they were unable to provide another room with working air conditioning that solved the problem. As a result, we had no realistic choice but to leave after the first night and book another hotel at our own expense, losing both money and valuable holiday time. If reliable air conditioning and a comfortable room are important to you—especially during warm weather—I would strongly recommend considering another hotel. My experience was extremely disappointing, and I sincerely hope the hotel addresses these issues for future guests.
