Woodfire at Westerlands

Fire-cooked gastro camping in Graffham, four miles from Midhurst

About Woodfire at Westerlands

Woodfire runs its Westerlands site on a private estate just south of Petworth, part of a small stable of "gastro-camping" pitches the company operates across the South Downs. The draw here is spacious tent camping paired with communal meals cooked over open fire—an approach that has earned national press attention as much for the food as for the setting. Pitches are generously spaced across parkland with views typical of this part of the Downs, and hot showers are provided on site.

The emphasis throughout is on a slower, more sociable style of camping: seasonal menus using local ingredients, communal fire-cooked dinners, and a programme of guest-chef feast nights through the summer that can be booked alongside your stay. This is not a site geared towards independent self-catering; it suits those who want the atmosphere of camping without doing all the cooking themselves. There are no electric hookups, shop, playground or Wi-Fi, and the site is tents-only rather than set up for caravans or motorhomes. Its appeal lies instead in genuine countryside just outside Petworth and a dining experience well above what most campsites attempt.

One of the best campsites I have stayed at. We camped at Woodfire but took advantage of all the extras ans it was perfect. The compost toilet were so clean and spacious. Alway toilet roll and hand-wash available. The showers were amazing. Love spacious area, hot and high pressure showers. The staff were amazing! We chos to buy breakfast and. one evening meal and it was perfect We really appreciated not having to fumble around with a camping stove ans have it made for us, way better than we could have done as well. Loved the popcorn too! Need the recipe. We do plan on going back soon!

Our third visit as a total favourite! As always, the food was awesome, facilities fantastic (best camping showers ever had!) and the team are great. There's something about the whole atmosphere and feel of Westerlands that makes it special and unique. We did a great walk to the South Downs and nearby pub, and returned to relaxed vibe and great food - with some beautiful views and weather. Perfect weekend away

We been seeing Stella, Griff & team, almost yearly since covid. There's not much NOT to love really. I love the eco-friendliness of the site. The showers are the best ever. The washing up facilities are great. The compost toilets took a little getting used to but they are always kept clean, and all the nature that comes out goes back into nature! The food is amazing. I highly recommend ordering food on the first night in case you having a not-so-smooth pitching session. Oh and the bavette, order the bavette if it's available. The location is beautiful. There were some particularly loud sheep through the day and night, but they were so cute and were forgiven every day. Plus it beats listening to traffic. Bring earplugs though! The service is always with a smile. I feel the city washing away as soon as i pull the handbrake on arrival.

My family stayed at Westerlands last weekend with some friends and it was an amazing experience. The setting is picturesque and beautiful and there is so much space for children to play. The food was a big highlight for me - delicious, home-cooked meals which included steak, lamb, chicken and outstanding vegetarian and children options as well. The outdoor showers are a lovely added touch - having a hot shower at night, outside in the moonlight was a perfect end to a great day. Finally, the staff are really kind and make it feel like a home away from home. A big thank you to all the staff for their hospitality and friendliness.
