You walk into Harvieston Hall through its entrance (4 steps) and find yourself in a substantial period house arranged across three floors. The ground floor opens into a living room with woodburner and Smart TV, flowing through to a dining room that seats 22, with a second woodburner. Two separate kitchens mean groups can split cooking duties: one has an electric range, microwave, two fridge-freezers and dishwasher; the other adds a washing machine, and both have everything needed for self-catering. A games room with board games, mini pool table and table football gives people something to do beyond mealtimes.

Bedrooms are distributed across all three levels to spread the group out. Ground floor has five: a king, three pairs of singles, and one single. First floor adds a triple and a king with single. The top floor holds two more king rooms, one with three additional singles, plus a second king-and-three-singles arrangement and a twin. There are four bathrooms between them, including one ensuite with a bath and shower. Central heating, linen, towels and wifi come as standard. One dog is welcome and stays free.

Gorebridge sits in the rural belt south of Edinburgh, about 30 minutes' drive from the city centre. A pub is within a mile, there's a garden with BBQ, and the private driveway takes numerous cars. No smoking inside the house.

DO NOT GO HERE!! The mansion house and rooms are filthy. We had originally planned to stay at the owners other property ‘Kirkhill Mansion’ but they bait and switched us the day before to Harvieston hall claiming there was a boiler issue there. We had trouble upon arriving as we were told to call the owner David 30mins before arrival to let us in, as we did the calls went unanswered so we had to call cottages.com to get a code for a key although that was pointless as there is no front door lock to the house so anyone can walk in at anytime whilst your staying there night or day. Upon looking around the house on arrival we found mouldy food within the cupboards. Unwashed bedding with hair and what looked like to be urine on the bed and on the mattresses themselves. The house had a foul odour to it which you could smell as soon as you walked in. The dishwasher still had cutlery in it which seemed to have been there a while as there was rotten food and a fish smell upon opening. The oven was filthy and upon wiping it was brown.. the pans and trays were also greasy. This accommodation was supposed to hold 16 of us for a family holiday for a personal event. The ceiling was chipping apart on some of the floors. There was black mould on parts of the walls in the dining room. Stains on the carpet. The WiFi didn’t work and there is no TV or lounge within the house like the pictures and property detail states. The owner wasn’t any help at all and denied there being any issues within the property. The photos on the website look massively different cleanliness wise compared to what the house actually offers. Whilst we were there the owner had double booked us with others and had put them round in the tower rooms of the castle and had sent them an email to let them know on that day that he had moved there rooms without even asking or confirming with them that it was ok. We also came across a young couple who came to the house looking for the owner as they were staying at the original house that we’d booked (Kirkhill Mansion with the apparent boiler issue) and they had said it was filthy and they were not happy with it at all. 7 of us out of our group of 16 found accommodation elsewhere due to the condition of the house. The others decided to stay in hope that we would get relocated as they’d already spent the money they had on this house so had no where else to go. Waste of time and money staying here, highly do not recommend!!

We arrived late after 10 hours of driving to take a shower and sleep. The room wasn't clean with pieces from the ceiling on the floor and broken mirror in the toilet. There was no one around to talk to so we decided to leave right away. We couldn't find anything around at that time without paying a lot of money so we ended up sleeping in the car with the engine running all night as it was freezing outside.

If you don’t want to sleep because you’re scared of noises and ghosts then here’s the place to be. This is a great place for large groups of people. Definitely will accommodate groups of 15.Very rustic and gothic style. The place is not very well kept and definitely will get you looking for another place to stay but if you romanticise it a little it’s great. Don’t go there if you’re scared of ghosts 😭😭. Very large space. Booked with AirBNB which was a disappointing experience. We booked the room above us and we were double booked and given the apartment downstairs which included a large space of kitchen and dining hall and living space as well as one double bedroom and a bedroom with two single bedrooms. Very dusty and old. Definitely has creaking noises and mice running around scratching something at night, footsteps of people above us. Lovely sky windows lighting up the living space. If you want a rustic and old mansion vibes this is the place to be. Very unclear on how to get into the actual apartment as it was labelled as a fire exit and had a metal bar door which we had to pry open. But other than that a solid 3/5 would have been a 5/5 if I actually slept. The kitchen was very well stocked. Don’t touch the sugar, coffee or tea they’re definitely years old but have all utensils and the the kitchen has definitely been renovated beautifully. If you’re planning a large group bring a portable toilet because there’s only one small toilet for apartment 1. Don’t go near the windows there’s cobwebs, dead flies and probably unnamed species of spiders. Would definitely go back with a large group so I’m not crap terrified.
