Herdwicks suits travellers who want a quiet, practical base for getting out onto the fells or along the Cumbrian coast rather than a destination in itself. With just four rooms, it has the feel of a small, personally run guest house, and its position at Steel Green near Millom puts Black Combe and the surrounding walking country within easy reach.

Rooms are en-suite, with family rooms available for those travelling with children, and each comes with drinks provided. Guests have use of a kitchen, a garden and outdoor seating area, and a picnic area for warmer days, while packed lunches can be arranged for a day on the hills. Sea views are on offer from parts of the property, and practical touches such as luggage storage, free WiFi and 24 hour reception make it straightforward for early starts or late arrivals.

The area around Millom gives plenty of reason to base yourself here: walking and cycling routes lead out from the doorstep, with fishing, horse riding, watersports and golf all nearby, plus pubs, restaurants and other entertainment within easy distance. It's a fitting spot for anyone whose holiday centres on being outdoors during the day and having somewhere unfussy to return to at night.
