Millom's coastline and fell-backed countryside make it a rewarding, if under-the-radar, spot for camping and glamping in the south-west Lake District. As with anywhere in England, wild camping is not legally permitted without the landowner's explicit permission, so it is worth sticking to established sites, several of which sit right on the edge of the estuary. Port Haverigg Holiday Village, just south of the town on the Duddon estuary, is built around a 200-acre freshwater lake and offers caravan and lodge holidays alongside watersports and fishing. Harbour Lights, in Haverigg itself, is a family-friendly park within walking distance of the beach, with grass touring pitches, hardstanding and electric hook-up options, and both camping pods and en-suite glamping pods for those who want a more sheltered stay.
The terrain here is a mix of flat estuary-side ground and the steeper slopes leading up to Black Combe, so most campsites cluster around Haverigg and the coast rather than up on the fell itself. Expect a bracing, breezy climate typical of the exposed Cumbrian coast: conditions can change quickly, and the estuary flats offer little shelter from the wind, so a sturdy tent or a caravan/pod option is worth considering outside the height of summer. The best camping season runs from late spring through to early autumn, when longer days suit walks up Black Combe or along the coast path, and the RSPB reserve at Hodbarrow is busiest with breeding and passage birds. Glamping pods and static caravans are a popular choice for visitors wanting the coastal setting without full exposure to the weather, and many sites here are dog-friendly, fitting well with the walking-and-wildlife appeal of the area. Given the modest number of sites locally compared to the honeypot Lake District valleys, booking ahead for summer weekends is worthwhile, though the area rarely gets as booked-out as Windermere or Coniston.
