Malt House works well for families or groups of eight seeking a substantial base in the Welsh borderlands. The four bedrooms comprise a kingsize with ensuite, two super-kingsize beds (one with ensuite), and a fourth with twin singles, served by a family bathroom. Downstairs, a living room and dining room both have open fires, and the kitchen is equipped for proper cooking. There's wifi throughout, and heating and bed linen are covered in the rate. One well-behaved dog is welcome.
The house stands in Skenfrith village with countryside views and a lawned garden enclosed by fencing, furnished with seats and a barbecue. Parking for four cars is on site. A few minutes on foot brings you to Skenfrith Castle, a National Trust property; Monmouth, with its famous fortified bridge, lies six miles away. The area suits walkers: the Monnow Valley, Three Castles Walk and Offa's Dyke Path are all accessible from here, as is the Skirrid eight miles off, which offers views across to the Brecon Beacons. Abergavenny's food festival and other events are twelve miles south. Dining ranges from The Bell at Skenfrith itself to the Michelin-starred Walnut Tree near Abergavenny, with a vineyard also nearby.
