Meelmore Lodge
52 Trassey Rd, Bryansford, Newcastle BT33 0QB, UK
A walkers' campsite in the Mournes with direct views into the Hare's Gap
About Meelmore Lodge
Meelmore Lodge sits seven miles from Newcastle with Slieve Meelmore filling the view and the Hare's Gap—one of the main routes onto the Mourne Wall ridge—directly ahead. The Trassey Track trailhead is close by, making this one of the most practical bases for walking the central Mournes. It's run as a family business built around exactly that kind of trip: a night under canvas within sight of the peaks and a walk straight from the tent the next morning.
Facilities are geared towards walkers and outdoor groups rather than touring caravans—grass tent pitches, showers, toilets and an on-site coffee shop serving hot food through the day. A hostel building offers indoor bunks for poor weather or larger parties, and firepits can be hired with firewood sold on site. The on-site bistro operates daily in peak season and at weekends outside it, giving a straightforward option for an evening meal without driving back into Newcastle. Duke of Edinburgh groups are a regular presence, though the site works just as well for a couple or family wanting one of the most scenic pitches in the range.

What visitors say
Open on weekends throughout winter I believe. Great spot for a coffee and snack before hiking the Mournes! Great tea and coffee! And lovely service from the young lady working there!

Visited this place with friends. Great facilities, all that is needed. Would highly recommend.

Great campsite, based at the bottom of o'hares gap, friendly staff, good toilet facilities, great showers. The cafe serves good food and is reasonably priced. Will definitely stay again. Car parking was including in the price of our tent pitch but parking for day trips is £4

Family run business. Kind people and always helpful. I haven't used much their facilities but the car park and the toilets. But planning to do camping with the family when the weather improves.
