About The Briers Country House
The Briers sits on the Middle Tollymore Road a short drive outside Newcastle, close to the entrance of Tollymore Forest Park and within five minutes of Royal County Down. The house has nine en-suite rooms plus a separate three-bedroom cottage with a hot tub, set in grounds the owners describe as a secret garden of native trees.
A bar and snug room with a large sports screen give it a more relaxed, pub-like feel than a typical guest house, and breakfast is served in the dining room each morning, with golf club storage available for visitors playing the nearby courses.
Its position away from the town centre suits visitors who want quiet evenings and mountain views over a central location, while still being a short drive from Newcastle's restaurants and the beach.
What guests say
We arrived at 16:30 and were greeted by the owner who was very friendly and helpful - he even offered a lift into Newcastle which was very nice! The room was nice, clean and comfortable. It was quiet and we had a great view from the window of some cute lambs and the Mourne mountains. Breakfast was serve yourself and continental style, but there was enough variety and it was fine.

Great stay, our first time here and would recommend and stay again. After seeing a few negative reviews I was a bit concerned, but I can't fault our experience. The room was clean, bright and spacious and the grounds and views were beautiful. The breakfast was continental style with bread, pancakes, wheaten bread, fresh boiled eggs, fruit, yogurts, cereals, tea, coffee and fruit juices, the breakfast room was lovely with lots of tables and views out to the garden, they also have picnic tables outside which would be lovely ona sunny day. Staff were very nice, I would stay again and ha e have already recommended to others. I have stayed in Newcastle many times in various places, but would return here for the value for money and views.

We waited over two hours to check-in (after the check-in time), very poor communication from hosts - we thought we had been scammed for a few hours. Eventually we had to get our key off a guy in a van although it turned out that our room was unlocked anyway. Breakfast was very plain. Positive was that it's a nice location and the room was comfortable. I would avoid staying here but if you do decide to stay I recommend bringing some reading while you wait to be checked in.

This property is beautiful and in the most gorgeous location just outside Newcastle. Our room was lovely and bed comfy. However we arrived at 2pm and there were no staff to be seen to check us in. We called for hours and had no reply and no contact. Eventually they arrived at 5.15pm to check us in and we had been waiting outside for 3 hours. luckily it was sunny... Unsure why they did not just leave the key in a safe box for self check-in, would have been much easier. Our cottage also promised a hot tub which on arrival was empty and we could not use it. This was very disappointing. A shame that it seems to be quite badly run/organised because it is a beautiful place
