A boutique coaching inn on Newport's main street with thirteen en-suite rooms above a restaurant serving local seafood and Welsh steaks.
About The Golden Lion
The Golden Lion has stood on East Street in the centre of Newport since it began life as a coaching house in the 1600s, and today combines a working pub and restaurant with thirteen en-suite bedrooms upstairs.
Rooms are comfortably furnished with double or king-size beds, flat-screen televisions and free Wi-Fi, and several are set up as dog-friendly, with dogs also welcome in the bar and garden. The restaurant specialises in local seafood and Welsh steaks alongside a well-kept range of real ales.
Its position in the middle of town means guests can walk to the shops, galleries and Parrog waterfront, while Newport Sands and the Coast Path are both within easy reach by foot or a short drive.

Booked online a table in the restaurant area for myself and four family members for a Saturday evening in mid-June. Service and food were excellent. The pub was busy but not packed. Good vibe. The parking outside is limited but a public car park off Long Street is just a five minute walk away. Based on our experience I would definitely recommend The Golden Lion. AR

Absolutely gorgeous fish and chips! We've been going to this pub for at least 10 years and the fish and chips have always been fantastic. I really like the haddock and chips (there's two types of fish and chips here!). The batter on the fish is perfect (not too thick, and perfectly crisp), and the fish is beautifully cooked. There is a pink sort of sauce that is served with it - I'm not too sure what it is, but it's lovely and zingy. It also comes with chilli sauce which is a nice twist. Wonderful pub and good service too.

Lovely cosy pub, a lot bigger on the inside than it appears. Service was really friendly and we got our food quickly, which was all delicious. Tasted like proper homemade pub food and I liked the selection they had on the menu. It was pretty busy so I would recommend to book if you're going in summer or a busier time of the year, but we were fine early spring. Only thing I'd note is that prices are a little steep (around £30 pp for main and drink) but it's good value for the quality.

We recently stayed at the Golden Lion Hotel and loved it. The location is good, easy to find. The staff is friendly, supportive and very helpful. The food was good and well presented. Rooms are small yet cosy. They could provide a small fan in the rooms as it was very hot during the month of June. The walk to the beach from the Hotel is just lovely.
