I recently stayed at the Pentire Hotel in Newquay over the bank holiday weekend, and overall it was a really enjoyable experience. The location is fantastic, especially if you enjoy walking. There are plenty of scenic routes nearby, and it’s a great base for exploring the coastline. The bank holiday weekend turned out to be a perfect little getaway. One of the highlights for me was the pool — it was lovely and warm, making it really relaxing and enjoyable to use. The staff were absolutely 10/10: friendly, helpful, and welcoming throughout the stay. Breakfast was also amazing, with plenty of choice and everything cooked really well. If I had to point out a couple of downsides, it would be that the rooms aren’t very soundproof — we could hear the neighbour’s TV quite clearly, which made it a bit difficult to fall asleep. Also, the £10 charge for parking while staying at the hotel felt a bit unnecessary; it would be great if this was included in the overall price. That said, these were fairly minor issues in what was otherwise a great stay. I’d definitely consider coming back and would recommend it to others looking for a relaxing break in Newquay.

**Absolutely awful!** Check-in is at 4:00 pm, which is later than most hotels, while check-out is at 10:30 am, which is earlier than usual. Parking outside the hotel is on a first-come, first-served basis, and once you have parked, you feel afraid to move your car in case you lose the space. On top of that, parking costs £10. The member of staff at check-in looked extremely sleepy and did not make us feel welcome at all. When we asked if they could store our luggage, we were told to take it to the office ourselves. The bathroom looked like something from a very poor Third World country. We tried to overlook that, but after having a shower and lying down on the bed, we noticed a terrible smell. We discovered that the pillows had a very strong smell of sweat. All four beds had smelly pillows, and even the two extra pillows we requested from reception smelled bad. We really wanted to leave and felt like crying. The entire room smelled of sweat. The doors were very old and made a terrible noise whenever they were closed. The plumbing was extremely noisy, and the mattress was badly sunken, leaving us with back pain after sleeping on it. We do not mind that the hotel is old, but the smell was completely unacceptable. We were so uncomfortable that we slept in our outdoor clothes and were afraid to use the duvet properly, so we only slept on top of it. We had to put up with the smell all night. It was unbelievable! Moving to another hotel with two young children would have been inconvenient and expensive. The Wi-Fi did not work, and even the television had no signal. I cannot believe that paying £250 would get us accommodation of this poor standard. I was so angry and upset that I could not sleep all night. This experience seriously damaged my impression of Cornwall.

Honest review – beautiful location but the hotel itself is very disappointing The photos really don’t do justice to the actual condition of this hotel – and unfortunately not in a good way. This property is not suitable for families or professionals. The corridors are extremely narrow (barely 2.5 feet wide) with old creaking wooden floors. The rooms feel dated and unclean despite fresh linen – there’s a persistent humid, musty smell throughout, and visible mould around the windows. The bathrooms are tiny, to the point where using the toilet is genuinely uncomfortable (very little legroom). The single lift is also very small, which makes getting to the upper floors with luggage, small children, or mobility issues quite difficult. The positives: The staff are excellent – genuinely 5-star service. They are friendly, courteous, and always willing to help. The breakfast is decent for the £13 per person price. The continental option was particularly good; the buffet is basic (breads, fruit, juices, tea/coffee) but acceptable. The location is the hotel’s biggest strength. The beach is literally a few minutes’ walk away and absolutely beautiful. It’s a shame the hotel’s poor condition ruins the overall experience and mood. One more thing worth mentioning: the hotel has a strong stale/pub-like smell right at the entrance, which is quite off-putting (and I travel a lot, so I’ve stayed in many places). If you’re looking for comfort, cleanliness, and a pleasant stay, I would look elsewhere. Only consider this hotel if the amazing beach access is your absolute priority and you can overlook the rest.

I expected much more for the price (£250 per night). The hotel feels dated and is in need of renovation. Cleanliness was below expectations, the car park was dirty, the staff were not particularly friendly, and the breakfast quality was disappointing. The location near Fistral Beach is good, but that alone does not justify the high price. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel at its current rates.
