Large groups and extended families need Baysdale Abbey, a converted farmhouse in Kildale that sleeps 18 across eight bedrooms and five bathrooms. The property sits on the grounds of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey within the North Yorkshire Moors, reached by a two-mile drive through working farmland where sheep and cattle graze. A network of footpaths begins at the door, making it ideal for walkers; the surrounding moorland and rural setting mean children need supervision near farm machinery and the fenced river that runs through the grounds.

Inside, the house combines original character with practical family accommodation. Ground-floor living and dining rooms have open fires, a kitchen with electric cooker and dishwasher sits alongside a breakfast area, and there is a separate toilet. Upstairs, bedrooms range from super-kingsize doubles to singles and bunks, with five bathrooms including one with a roll-top bath and another with a walk-in shower. The property is yours alone—no other guests, no shared facilities except the two-acre moorland grounds.

Essentials are covered: electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi are included, along with heating and wood for the fires. A large garden with sitting-out area and barbecue surrounds the house, there is parking for four cars on site, and one well-behaved pet stays free. Smoking is not permitted inside.

What a lovely place to stay for the week. The house is more than we expected and the pictures don't do this lovely house any justice. Nothing near by, in the middle of nowhere is what we wanted. It didn't take long to get on the main roads but the journey leading up to them the scenery was amazing. The views and walks around the house were lovely. We loved watching the sheep, chickens, rabbits, sheep dogs at work and the house martins feeding their chicks. We loved the size of the house for 15 of us and a dog. So much space, loads of bathrooms, comfy beds, table to sit all, massive fridge, wood for the fire, benches to sit outside, bbq, washing machine in the shared laundry room and dryer. Very handy having two dishwashers in the kitchen. Ali was very welcoming when we arrived and popped in to see how our holiday was going. We loved hearing the history of the house from her. A great base to visit Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, York, York outlet, Falling Foss and Aysgarve Falls. We will be back! Thank you Ali for taking such great care of us
