Lambert Hill Cottage

North Yorkshire

View on Google Maps

Ruswarp sits on the edge of Whitby's orbit, close enough to reach the abbey and beach in minutes, far enough to feel like a separate place. The River Esk runs past Lambert Hill Cottage, and across the way you can rent kayaks, paddleboards and boats to explore the water. The village itself is quiet, with the North York Moors rising inland and the coast within easy reach.

The cottage is a converted 19th-century schoolhouse, all on one level for accessibility. It sleeps six across three bedrooms: a super king, a zip-and-link twin with its own bathroom, and a standard king. Two bathrooms serve the property. The kitchen is fitted out for real cooking, with a gas cooker, dishwasher and all the usual kit. A wood-burning fire heats the living room, and there's wifi throughout. Bed linen and towels are included. A rear garden opens onto woodland you can walk through, though the stream back there needs supervising if children or a dog are with you—one small to medium-sized dog stays free. Two cars fit in the private parking area.

The conversion has kept some character—wooden floors in the main rooms, William Morris fabrics, stone detailing—without feeling like a museum. This suits families wanting Whitby's attractions without being in the thick of the town, or anyone after a base for moor walks and coastal exploration.
