Photo: Heron House

Berwick-upon-Tweed sits where the Northumberland coast meets Scotland, and Heron House occupies a riverside position that puts the beaches of Berwick and Spittal within walking distance. The town itself is a few minutes away on foot, with shops, pubs and restaurants nearby. Further afield, the Northumberland and Berwickshire coastline offers plenty to explore, and the A1 and rail station are both accessible.

The house spreads across two floors. Downstairs, a living room with woodburner opens to a spacious kitchen and dining area refitted to modern standards with electric range, dishwasher and all the basics for self-catering. Upstairs are three bedrooms—a king, a double and two singles—sleeping six in total. The bathroom has a roll-top bath and walk-in shower. One well-behaved pet stays free. Essentials like electricity, heating, bed linen, towels and wi-fi are included, and there is private parking for one car plus additional on-street parking. The enclosed walled garden has patio seating and a barbecue. No smoking inside.

The house suits families or groups looking for a base near the coast. Note that there are four steps up to the upper garden area.

Excellent cottage. Will look at going back again! Perfectly positioned with an OUTSTANDING view. Upon arrival we had a hamper basket full of the essentials (including wine) and a fridge with a bottle of milk in it. Perfect! The bed was comfy, the house was very clean and tidy with a lot of useful equipment. We couldn't ask for more. Communication was excellent and we can not knock anything about Heron House. Berwick is quiet but has all the amenities you would want with a local ASDA and M&S within walking distance if you want to walk it. The Barrels pub provides a very warm welcome which is also walkable from the accomodation. If you go to Alnwick then we suggest that you go into "Turnbull's Northumbrian Food Hall" which is just off the A1 at Alnwick! Excellent food! Don't forget to go to the promonade at Spittal (again walkable) as the views are also very spectacular! Forget the Holy Island as they are not happy about cars on the island and it was awkward for parking unless you wanted to walk with the other 1000 ramblers! However Bamburgh Castle is brilliant and is only a short stones throw away from here. Sea Houses which is just down from Bamburgh also sports a "Banksy" if you know where to look on the harbour? Nip into Scotland and Eyemouth to feed the seals at 12:00 or to marvel at another view. The Ship Inn has some very nice food and service near the harbour also. a 5 minute drive further up the coastal road in Scotland will get you into St Abbs which is twinned with "New Asgard" from the Avengers fame! Quiet but quaint. You can not do anything wrong by staying at Heron House and whatever you plan on doing the would recommend you call in at the Riverside Cafe for a welcome cuppa and cake before trotting on. Thank you all for making us so welcome! I have attached some views from an around the property.
