Rose Cottage is a fortified house built in the 1580s to withstand Border Reiver attacks, now converted into a holiday cottage. The building stands within the remains of Bremenium Roman Fort, itself constructed on an Iron Age site—you can see the fort's gate foundations and cremation sites from Dere Street, with grassy outlines of Roman buildings visible across the surrounding grounds. The Dark Sky Park designation makes the location exceptional for stargazing.
Two bedrooms and one bathroom occupy the first floor: one bedroom has a super king bed and dressing area, the other a king bed plus bunk beds for children. Downstairs, the living room has a woodburner and projector screen, while the kitchen and dining room feature a Rayburn, electric hob, dishwasher and all the essentials for self-catering. A wood-burning stove provides heating, with electricity, bed linen, towels and wi-fi included; initial fuel for the burner is supplied. An enclosed garden with seating area and parking for two cars complete the setup. No smoking.
The Pennine Way and Scottish border lie six miles north across moorland. Rivers and streams thread through nearby valleys within easy walking distance. Kielder Forest is 10 minutes away; Jedburgh, Rothbury and Bellingham are all within 30 minutes' drive, offering access to the Cheviot Hills, Simonside range and Hadrian's Wall. National Trust properties at Wallington and Cragside, plus Roman museums at Chesters, Corbridge and Housesteads, make this a base for exploring significant historical sites across the region.
