Well-equipped park a short walk from central Kirkwall and the leisure centre

About Orkney Caravan Park at The Pickaquoy Centre

Orkney Caravan Park sits just west of Kirkwall town centre, attached to the Pickaquoy leisure complex and only a few minutes' walk from the cathedral, harbour and shops. That combination of a proper serviced site and a genuinely central location is rare anywhere in Scotland, let alone on the islands, making it an obvious first or last night for ferry arrivals or a comfortable base for exploring without a car—buses to Stromness and the western sites leave from town.

The park takes tourers, motorhomes and tents on grass and hardstanding pitches with electric hook-ups, plus camping pods if you'd rather avoid wrestling canvas in an Orkney breeze. Facilities are modern and well maintained: individual shower rooms with reliable hot water, a communal lounge, kitchen with microwave and fridges, laundry and motorhome services. Reception runs through the leisure centre next door, which gives guests access to sports halls, a gym, cinema screenings and a café—a genuine asset when the weather turns and children need entertaining.

Prices are reasonable and staff are welcoming, though the site can feel a little utilitarian compared to more scenic coastal pitches. Book ahead for July and August. Skara Brae is twenty minutes by car, the Italian Chapel ten, and Highland Park distillery is a short walk.

What a fantastic campground. The location is perfect, great facilities; never have to wait for a shower or toilet, it all felt very cozy and welcoming. The grounds themselves were green and peaceful. Everyone was friendly. All within an easy walk to the city center and right next to a bus stop. They even help you out with late check in/out if you’re on a late ferry. The warden Carol was an absolute joy to have around. I really loved talking and getting to know her. She was super helpful and really cares about making sure all campers have the best experience possible. All the staff were kind and helpful, laid back and friendly. I highly recommend staying here and plan to come back. Thank you Carol!

Very convenient. 38 pounds but bathrooms with shower and toilets together, all the other camping services included, access to 3 supermarkets, lidl teco and coop at 5 minutes walk. City centre at 10 minutes walk.

A town centre site which offers all town amenities near by. Only 4 showers available to use even though there is twice this many which meant long queues! A nightmare when the site is practically full. Washing machine and tumble dryer set up to use you money with settings that run in 15min increments and the wash taking 35! I didn't appreciate being followed around by the staff checking what I was doing! I'm a grown up I won't touch what I'm not supposed to nor take what isn't mine! Showers very dirty despite the staff 'always cleaning'! Good points, several fridge/freezers available for all to use!

Extremely Rude Warden Our service was faultless to begin with until it was time to check out when we met the warden called Carol. There was a mistake with the booking on our end but we were very apologetic and understanding about it. We received nothing but attitude from Carol. The pod was booked for two while there were four of us and a direct quote from Carol was “Well can you not count?” We found this behaviour completely unnecessary and felt unfairly targeted. As teenagers, we were left with the impression that Carol would not have addressed others in the same way that she addressed us. Age shouldn’t equal respect. Based off other reviews Carol’s name comes up a few times regarding poor service. Safe to say, we will not be returning.
