Tilly Cottage

Photo: Tilly Cottage

Nelson sits in the heart of Pendle, where moorland walks meet industrial heritage and the countryside rolls toward the Ribble Valley. Tilly Cottage is an end-of-terrace house that has been refurbished while keeping much of its original character—exposed stone, fireplaces, the bones of an older building given fresh life. It sleeps four across two double bedrooms and one bathroom, with a kitchen large enough to cook in properly, and a living room that opens onto a balcony. You have the whole place to yourselves, and one well-behaved dog can come along.

The balcony overlooks local fields towards Pendle Hill, and there is on-road parking outside. Inside, the essentials are covered: heating, electricity, bed linen, towels and wi-fi. The Rising Sun Inn is within easy reach. A café up the road serves breakfast; there are dog-friendly eating places dotted about. Barrowford, little more than a mile away, has independent shops and cafés. Clitheroe, the market town 17 miles off, holds an artisan food hall and a brewery in a converted mill. The Forest of Bowland and walks through the Ribble Valley are within driving distance, and Skipton—gateway to the Yorkshire Dales—is twenty minutes by car.

What makes this location work is how close the walking starts: fields and country lanes begin practically at the gate, Pendle Hill is an obvious pull for a day out, and the villages of Roughlee and Barley sit just beyond. This is somewhere to base yourself if you want to explore on foot or by bike rather than move on every few days. No smoking inside.

Such a lovely cottage with a beautiful view of pendle hill. We spent most of the time on the balcony just enjoying the view! Everywhere was clean and tidy. Anne was super helpful and a great host! Also a pub right across the road which was great. Would definitely stay here again:)

The cottage is not only well-equipped from toiletries to kitchen equipment but has everything to make a stay idyllic in the winter or the summer. The terrace is a treat with its views of rolling hills, and decorated with fairy lights glowing around the balcony. The cottage is near picturesque villages such as Barley and Downham as well as wonderful walks. Anne was on hand to help make our stay an absolute delight.

Lovely cottage in the pretty village of Blacko, not far from Nelson. The location is perfect for exploring the Lancashire/Yorkshire border area, the Dales or the Forest of Bowland. The cottage has two good-sized double bedrooms with loads of storage space. One has a great view towards Pendle Hill. The bathroom has a shower over the bath, with plenty of water pressure and hot water on demand. Downstairs there’s a large kitchen/dining room which is well equipped with 2 ring electric hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle etc. The kitchen leads to a large but cozy living room/lounge with two sofas and a gas-fired hearth. This room has a huge window which makes the most of the beautiful view. From the lounge, a door leads onto a balcony where you can enjoy the afternoon sun, looking across the meadows to the hills on the other side of the valley.
