About The George Hotel - Orton
Orton is a quiet village on the western edge of the Yorkshire Dales, within reach of Appleby Castle and good cycling country, and it's here that The George Hotel - Orton makes its home. The building combines a working pub and restaurant with eight guest rooms spread over three floors, giving it the feel of a proper local rather than a standard hotel.
Rooms are en-suite, comfortable and warm, and generally considered good value for what's included. Downstairs, the kitchen turns out hearty food with a particular reputation for its Sunday roasts, backed by a solid choice of local ales at the bar. Breakfast is served on-site, and other facilities include free WiFi, drinks available in rooms, laundry service, luggage storage and a small gym, along with meeting rooms and concierge services for those combining business with a stay. The property also hosts weddings.
Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is welcoming, which suits the village setting well. There's no parking at the property itself, so this is worth planning around, but pubs, restaurants and entertainment nearby mean guests without a car can still find plenty to do close by.

What guests say
Walking the C2C and this one of the best stays we have had. Passed the 4C test easily. Cost, comfort cleanliness and convenience. Add to that a warm welcome by the owner, a kitchen that had absolutely no problem catering for gluten free. The continental breakfast was more than enough to set you for the day. Nice one , recommend to other C2C travellers

The place is good, but, we where there in April 2026 10th. Weather super cold out side and they very stingy with the heating in the rooms. We had to ask them many times to turn it on. Seems not a daily on system. It’s clear they do need an engineer to rebalance the system’s to the rooms to make it warm and put the rooms on. Guess as early season they want to save money. In summer and busy times there would be an issue but we were early season. Other than that great place, nice staff, breakfast continental only a change and good. Very helpful staff.

After a long walk we were in need of a good meal late on a Saturday- staff at The George were so welcoming and both the service and the food was excellent. How a pub should be. We enjoyed chatting to the locals. There is no doubt that I will be recommending to friends and family and can’t wait to go back.

Only came for a meal, so cannot score/comment on rooms. Had a Sunday lunch here which was amazing! Such good value for money & so tasty. Staff are very friendly & helpful. Great atmosphere too. Seemed to have plenty of hikers staying & they used the luggage delivery service. Would definitely visit again & highly recommend!
