About The Old Railway Station

The Old Railway Station occupies Petworth's former station building, built in 1892 and closed to passengers decades ago, a mile or so south of the town at Coultershaw Bridge. Rather than demolish the platform buildings, the owners restored the Station House and added four fully-restored Edwardian Pullman railway carriages, creating a genuinely unusual place to stay in the South Downs National Park.

Ten guest rooms are split between the two rooms in the Station House itself, one reached by a spiral staircase and vaulted ceiling, the other more accessible for those with limited mobility, and eight rooms across the Pullman carriages, each retaining a sense of the original railway fittings. A full English or continental breakfast is served in the Waiting Room or out on the platform in good weather, and afternoon teas are available daily with advance booking.

Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the property, and the setting, on the old Petworth to Midhurst line, gives easy access to walking routes as well as the town centre, a short drive away. It has built a strong reputation as one of the more memorable places to stay anywhere near Petworth.

What an amazing place! Set in a beautiful location, with a lovely garden, this exquisite old Station and Pullman carriages have been clearly lovingly renovated with great attention to detail, to provide really comfortable accomodation. The carraiges all have baths - some even with seperate showers. Afternoon tea on the platform - surrounded by beaitiful plants - or in the Waiting Room is a wonderful relaxing experience, and the meals served in newly referbished Pullman dining car, 'Princess Ena' is so good! The staff are absolutely wonderful and SO helpful and friendly. I would recommend the Old Railway Station to anyone looking for a special or unusual place to stay. It's amazing!

This place is an absolute dream!!!! We stayed in an old Pullman train carriage that’s been turned into a gorgeous room. The afternoon tea was fantastic, and having dinner inside another old converted railway carriage was unforgettable. The staff were absolutely amazing and took such good care of us—the food, the vibe, and the whole experience were perfect! I would highly recommend booking!! We will definitely be back soon. Thank you.

We went to The Old Railway Station for an afternoon tea, I was brought a voucher as a Christmas present, and it was absolutely fantastic. Stunning buildings and setting, excellent friendly service and the afternoon tea was absolutely delicious. We ate outside as it was such a lovely day but the waiting room, where afternoon teas are served, is beautiful with lots of pictures and memorabilia which are lovely to look through. I would highly recommend, it is definitely worth a visit. We shall be going back to stay in one of the carriages and have a dinner in the dining carriage which looked amazing too.
