The Welldiggers Arms

This was the second pub we have stayed at this year in the Butcombe group and we were slightly disappointed. We stayed in the Signature Room with a view. The view was lovely but the room and bathroom were small. The bed was comfortable but the lighting was poor and the bedroom was not arranged well. There were very few places to put anything which was the same in the bathroom. For the price we paid, we would have expected more space. There were limited Gluten free options on the menu and the service was slow at dinner in the evening. Having said that the food we had was excellent and all the staff were very friendly and accommodating. We did not have lunch as the lunch menu was more like a dinner menu again with limited GF options. We ended up going into Petworth and found a lovely cafe called Saddlers. Overall we did not find the stay value for money.

What a beautiful pub/hotel. About 1.2 miles from Petworth. Our kids had booked us an overnight stay for my wife’s birthday. Amazing views, and the pub is immaculate. The food was amazing and very reasonable. The flat iron steak was cooked to perfection and my wife said that her fish and chips were the best she’s ever had! Breakfast was excellent, they even had freshly made smoothies if you’re not a big full English fan, plenty of choice. Super dog friendly, our Fox Red Labrador even has his own bottle of chilled water as you can see in the photos. A very comfortable stay in a wonderful room, very tasteful. Our only very minor criticism was the A road that it was situated on which can get a little noisy with passing motorcycles - but they’ve done the best they can to mitigate the noise. We will definitely return and highly recommend a stay or even just dinner.

Two trips here - separated by three years! First visit included a stay overnight. Both times we had drinks and a meal. I have to say this is a very nicely organised, and provisioned, establishment. Food great - good menu. Drinks good too. Service generally fine too. Clean, bright, attractive environment. Very well worth a visit, and the surrounding countryside is fabulous!

We had a wonderful stay and would happily return. Our room offered a stunning view across the fields — a peaceful, beautiful setting to wake up to. The staff were warm and friendly throughout. Breakfast was excellent, with plenty of choice and everything freshly prepared. Highly recommended!
