What visitors say
This huge cathedral mixes old history with some more modern elements. Of the many features worth seeing are the stained glass windows, many of which depict biblical episodes. Unusually, the spire does not feature a cross, but a weathervane-like ship, called the Golden Barque. In a central location is the tombstone of the only sailor of the Mary Rose ship which has been recovered.

Free to visit and easy to stop into while exploring the city. The church was originally founded in 1180, later rebuilt in the 17th century, and became a cathedral in 1927, with further extensions added during the 20th century. Inside is fairly simple and not the most memorable cathedral, though there are a few informational signs - including about the baptistery and the quire - if you want a bit of historical context while walking through.

A warm Christmas greeting awaits anyone visiting now for the crib or other seasonal services. Choristers join with vocalists and musicians from the nearby Grammar school to give public performances. There are toilets available and disabled access. Children are especially welcome to visit as there are many reminders of Portsmouths Naval History for the casual visitor or history buff too. Around the cathedral are colourful blossom trees as well as a memorial for the WRNS.

I enjoyed my visit here. It is quiet, relaxing and a straightforward layout. Wheelchair accessible but there are steps inside that prevent access.
