The Queens Hotel Southsea

The Queen’s Hotel is a lovely old building with a lot of character. The foyer is stunning, and the bar and restaurant areas are equally impressive, with a real sense of history and grandeur. Our room was a good size and the bathroom looked fairly new, which was a pleasant surprise. The bed was slightly soft for my liking, but that is very subjective and others may find it perfectly comfortable. The lift must be one of the slowest in the country, so patience is required! The main issue was the heat once upstairs (2nd floor). The room was far too hot, and the radiators in the hallway appeared to be on full blast all day and night. It was so stifling that staff had opened the hallway windows just to make the area bearable as they were cleaning rooms. Even with our bedroom window wide open, the room remained uncomfortable. The hotel clearly knows this is an issue, as there were two fans provided in the wardrobe, but that feels more like a workaround than a solution. Thermostatic radiator valves or some form of better heating control would make a huge difference. Overall, it is a beautiful, characterful hotel with some lovely public spaces and decent rooms, but the excessive heat affected the comfort of the stay.

Lovely building well placed for the GP sailing. Karen on the dining room in the evening was very helpful and service and food were very good, however, on both morning breakfast was a shambles. One breakfast out of two came but the other seemed to be a real problem and finally came after nearly an hour! Decaf coffee was awful so we had to pay for a decaf americano from the bar. Both mornings were a struggle for service which really spoiled the start to the day. Also for some reason you can’t order a drink at the bar and charge to your room despite leaving credit card details at reception on checking in!!

We recently celebrated our wedding at The Queens Hotel and I can honestly say the staff made it unforgettable. A special thank you to Zuzanna and Alice from the events team, who were absolutely exceptional from start to finish. Their attention to detail, calm approach, and genuine care ensured everything ran seamlessly. They truly went above and beyond. We also had a fantastic bartender with us all day in the Libby Room, who kept everyone smiling and well looked after – a real credit to the team. In fact, every member of staff we encountered was warm, professional, and couldn’t do enough for us. Nothing was ever too much trouble, which made the whole day feel effortless and incredibly special. If you’re considering The Queens for a wedding or special event, you’ll be in very safe hands.

Disclaimer - We did not actually stay at the Queen's hotel, however, during our South coast stay, for the two days we were in Southsea, we did come here for breakfast. The breakfast is £18 per person, which we strongly believe represents excellent value for the quality of the breakfasts. The first morning we were there, you ordered a hot breakfast from the menu and you could also help yourself to all continental options and a range of hot and cold drinks. The second morning was all buffet, hot and continental. This was, simply put, the best breakfast we have ever had. Based on the quality of the food and service, and the cleanliness of the lobby and dining and bar areas, we would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay there ourselves.
