St Abbs Lighthouse Cottages - The Bothy

Scottish Borders

Photo: Google Maps

The Scottish Borders coastline near Eyemouth draws walkers and naturalists to St Abbs Head, where dramatic cliffs rise above a nature reserve known for seals, seabirds and rocky coves. The Bothy sits within this landscape as part of a converted lighthouse cottage collection, a private retreat for two on the cliff edge itself.

The entire ground-floor space opens as one room: living area with sofa bed, dining section, and galley kitchen equipped for proper cooking rather than just heating. A shower room and separate toilet complete the layout. Essentials like bed linen, towels, wi-fi and heating are included; there is parking for one car on site. The approach is single-level, with one step to the entrance. No smoking throughout.

From here, coastal footpaths lead directly into the nature reserve, while St Abbs village—a working fishing harbour with a café and visitor centre—is minutes away. Coldingham Bay stretches south for swimming or rock pooling. Eyemouth, a proper town with galleries and restaurants, lies a short drive inland. This is a place to come for solitude and views rather than entertainment, suited to couples seeking a quiet base or solo travellers wanting to walk the clifftops.

What a lovely holiday in this unique location. The cottage was modern, spacious, warm and well equipped with views of the sunrise and sunsets. The wildlife all come to say hello from badgers to deer, hares to Gannet's and whales and dolphins have been seen but they were a no show for us. The road up to the lighthouse was narrow but scenic and we spent hours sitting in our own sheltered and secluded Pertico Bay. Walking to St Abbs, breakfast at the nature centre and golf courses to die for are all on my 'must do' list. If you need escapism, to switch off from the busy world, then I can't recommend this place enough.
